Chapter 62: The Scientist in the Apocalypse
Xue Feifei stepped right over the sofa and chased after Tuantuan, but she was just an ordinary person—how could she hope to catch up with the nimble Tuantuan? Tuantuan darted and dodged around the room like a clever little cat, making Xue Feifei spin in circles, but always slipping from her grasp.
“Hmph! With your decaying mortal body, you think you can catch up with the great Vampire Queen? How naive—ha ha ha…”
Tuantuan skillfully evaded her sister while occasionally glancing back to fire off a taunt.
“You’re going to drive me mad! I knew I shouldn’t have let you come back!” Xue Feifei, furious, wiped the water from her face and, unable to care about anything else, lunged after her.
“Hmph! Do you think I wanted to come back? If it weren’t for my companions still here, I would have left long ago…”
The two chased and fled through the already cramped space, and the room—which had just been tidied—quickly dissolved back into chaos.
Kong Zhe’s face darkened, his mouth twitching involuntarily. As the two dashed past him, he raised both hands and knocked them each on the head.
“Ow, that hurts!”
“Ouch!”
Both cried out, crouching on the floor and clutching their heads, too pained to stand.
“Why did you hit me, too?” Xue Feifei asked with a plaintive look.
“You know why. You’re grown, but you’re still messing around like a child!” Kong Zhe scolded, his expression stern.
“No wonder you’re my nemesis! Though we’re rivals, we’re both part of the dark faction—when faced with the forces of light, we must join hands…” Tuantuan covered her head with one hand and gave a thumbs-up with the other, praising him.
“Shut up!” Kong Zhe glared, then hoisted them up and tossed them onto the nearby sofa. He turned to where little Lei was kneeling on the floor, cleaning.
“Lei, stop working. Come here!”
“Okay!” Lei obediently stopped what she was doing and hurried over to Kong Zhe.

“You’ve worked hard…” Unlike his attitude toward the others, Kong Zhe smiled gently at Lei and patted her head.
Lei smiled sweetly at him, closing her eyes like a contented kitten, basking in his affection. It seemed that his praise made all her previous effort worthwhile.
After seating Lei on the sofa, Kong Zhe took a seat on the chair opposite, gazing at the three women before him.
Tuantuan and Xue Feifei were still at odds, but with Kong Zhe watching, neither dared make a move. They exchanged glances, snorted in unison, and turned away from each other.
Kong Zhe could only shake his head, baffled by the sisters’ behavior.
Tomorrow morning, the escort mission would be announced. He intended to take on the three-person task, and these three were his chosen companions.
He cleared his throat, drawing their attention.
“The apocalypse has been underway for more than a day. You must have some sense of what’s happening outside. So, tell me—what are your plans?”
As soon as he finished, worry clouded Lei’s face. Kong Zhe had once promised to help her find her sister, but now he was asking about her plans. Was he reconsidering? Did he no longer want to take her?
Anxious, Lei didn’t know how to respond; her big, misty eyes blinked up at Kong Zhe, seeking help.
Noticing Lei’s expression, Kong Zhe quickly reassured her, “Of course, I’ve promised to take Lei to the new district to find her sister. Her route is settled—I’ll take her with me. What about you two?” He looked at the other women and added, “I’ll be honest—the city center of the new district already has a protective shield. Monsters can’t get in, and there’s military protection. It’s the safest place in Golden City. Everywhere else will eventually fall to the beasts—it’s only a matter of time.”
He spread his hands, meeting their eyes. “Now, you have a choice. Would you like to join Lei and go to the new district with me?”
“Hmph! Of course I’ll stay with my companions. We vampires never abandon our own… Besides, this is an adventure—it sounds quite intere—” Tuantuan almost slipped, then coughed and changed her tune, “The new district, huh? Excellent. I’ve decided—it will be the first step in my conquest of humanity, ha ha ha…”
Kong Zhe was speechless. This little rascal still hadn’t grasped the gravity of the situation—adventure? It was the apocalypse; survival was all that mattered.
No matter, at least she agreed. He’d have ways to deal with her later.
He looked to Xue Feifei. “And you?”
Xue Feifei hesitated, tilting her head in thought, then finally uttered four words.
“The new district? Too far… Too much trouble… Not going.”
Kong Zhe’s eye twitched—just as he expected. She was truly the embodiment of laziness.

He didn’t get angry. Though this woman hadn’t awakened any abilities, she was the one he most wanted to take with him—the reason being her status as a scientist.
Kong Zhe vividly remembered scenes from the three years of the last apocalypse. It was still the early days now; only low-level beasts had appeared, but even so, Earth had become a bloody hell overnight.
In time, otherworldly races would arrive: beastfolk, sea clans, elves, undead—these major races had survived in their own worlds for millions of years, and would not show mercy to Earth’s native humans.
Their lands had long been divided; minor races either clung to dangerous enclaves or became subservient to others. Goblins served as slaves to humans, fairies became companion species to blood elves, and even the gentle giants, under pressure, joined the forest elves as mountain giants to survive.
Once these major races descended on Earth, they would treat it as a colony, waging wars, seizing territory, and seeking to wipe out humanity.
Even with awakened humans, their numbers paled in comparison to ancient races, and their abilities could not match. In theory, humans should have been eradicated early in the apocalypse, but in the last era, they managed to survive in the gaps between the great races.
A crucial reason for this was the scientists of Earth.
These scientists became a precious asset after the apocalypse began. Using their intellect, they fused magic and technology to create a unique discipline: magitech. Through research, they developed powerful new weapons.
With these weapons, even ordinary people could fight beasts and launch counterattacks against otherworldly races. Thanks to these inventions, humanity managed to survive the siege and established several large cities in the northwest of the new world, forming the United Kingdom of Humanity.
Though their territory was small, they became a recognized new force among the otherworldly races. They soon built alliances and trade links, exporting human technology products to these places.
Thus, the military and major organizations began to cultivate high-level scientists from before the apocalypse, supporting their research at any cost. Even small breakthroughs could yield huge returns and catapult a faction to power.
Of course, not every scientist had such prowess. The military divided scientists into ranks, from one to five being ordinary scholars, while only those at rank six and above could truly research magitech.
Rank six scientists were rare, and to protect them, the human bases agreed never to persecute high-level scientists for personal gain, granting them maximum freedom and support. Any faction violating this principle would face collective retaliation.
So scientists retained high status after the apocalypse—even the leaders of powerful organizations treated them with utmost respect, lest they defect to rival factions, who would pay dearly to recruit them.
Now, sitting opposite Kong Zhe was Xue Feifei. He was certain her intellect rivaled any high-level scientist of the previous era, even matching the monstrous rank-nine scientists.
Such talent should not be let go lightly. He had no faction yet, but as a reborn, it was only a matter of time before he founded his own. Recruiting scientists early was a priority; if he could build a good relationship with her at the start, her stubborn nature meant she’d likely never leave him for another faction.
“Are you sure?” Kong Zhe coaxed, “Remember, this is the apocalypse. If you stay here, no one will deliver food anymore. Once I leave, you won’t even be able to go out, and you won’t get any materials. Your research will have to stop!”
