Chapter 84: Betrayal
Du Bin dashed out of the apartment, chasing after Fang Yilin, and finally caught up with her just as she was about to get into her car. Grabbing her arm, he said, “Yilin, please calm down.”
“What’s there to talk about? I know I made mistakes before and hurt you. If you’ve found someone new, I have nothing more to say.”
“My feelings for her began after we broke up. What I wanted to tell you was, our time is no longer right. We can’t go back to how things were.”
“Because of her.”
“Yes, I like her. I don’t care about her background.”
Hearing such resolute words, Fang Yilin felt a deep pain in her heart. If it weren’t for that person, Du Bin would never have resisted her. If that person disappeared, Du Bin would be hers.
After steadying her emotions, Fang Yilin said, “Since you love her so much, I won’t keep pestering you. Would you accompany me to buy some groceries? Let this meal be my blessing for you both.”
“Alright.” Du Bin had been troubled about how to handle Fang Yilin, but seeing her so forthright, he felt relieved. He truly hoped she would find a good man who loved her.
After shopping, Fang Yilin seemed transformed. She hummed a tune as she cooked, cheerful and lively. Because Du Bin hadn’t told her about his peaceful breakup with Fang Yilin, Ye Tang mistakenly thought the two had reconciled. Facing what appeared to be a loving couple in the kitchen, she felt awkward.
Du Bin, knowing Ye Tang’s tastes, had asked Fang Yilin, a skilled cook, to prepare a meal just for her.
When dinner was served, dish after dish appeared on the table, all favorites of Ye Tang. She looked at the pair in surprise, and Du Bin quietly placed food in her bowl, saying, “I asked Yilin to make these—they’re all your favorites.”
“Thank you. Why aren’t you eating?”
With a friendly smile, Fang Yilin replied, “I’m not hungry. Eat as much as you like.”
Caught by their gazes, Ye Tang felt a little uncomfortable and focused on her meal. Fang Yilin chatted with Du Bin, but his responses were absent-minded, his attention completely absorbed by Ye Tang, while Fang Yilin’s lips curled up in a smile.
Suddenly, Ye Tang felt something was wrong; her head grew dizzy. Du Bin noticed her discomfort and rushed to her side. “Tang, what’s wrong?”
“My head is spinning,” Ye Tang murmured, her mind whirling. Before long, she lost consciousness, collapsing into his arms.
Du Bin himself began to feel a faint reaction. Since he hadn’t eaten much, the effect was less severe. He turned to Fang Yilin and shouted, “What did you put in the food?”
“I added a drug specially formulated for people with abilities. Anyone who eats it will temporarily lose their powers and fall into a deep coma.” Fang Yilin smiled, pulling a small vial from her purse. Only a little of the watery liquid remained; half a bottle was enough for the effect, but she had nearly emptied it.
Surprised that she knew about people with abilities, Du Bin asked, “How do you know about that?”
“I not only know about abilities, I also know she’s a vampire.”
“Are you one of them?” Du Bin couldn’t believe Fang Yilin was gifted; after so many years together, was it possible?
“I’m neither someone with abilities nor a vampire. I’m a true human being. Blame her. If you hadn’t chosen her over me, I wouldn’t have done this to you both.”
“What do you mean?”
“What do I mean? She’s a highly valuable commodity. Someone offered me ten million for her. If I hand her over to that benefactor, we’ll have a carefree life.” Fang Yilin pulled out her phone, opened an app, and showed him her balance—ten million.
“Is it worth selling your conscience for money like this?”
“I’m in it for the money. Unlike you, clinging to your morals and living in poverty every day. Isn’t it enough? Running around for money, haven’t you suffered enough?”
“Even if I’m poor, I have dignity. I won’t betray others for money like you.” Du Bin laid Ye Tang on the sofa. Disappointment and anger welled up within him; he couldn’t believe she’d sell her humanity for money.
“You’re so stubborn. I’m doing this for our future, even for the next generation.” Fang Yilin was furious at his persistence, slamming the table.
Du Bin retorted, slamming the table back, “After what you’ve done, do you think we have a future?”
“Why not?”
“I don’t see it.”
“I do, because I’m pregnant.”
Du Bin was stunned, momentarily dazed. Then he denied it, “Impossible. We haven’t been back together for even a month. How could you be pregnant?”
“Why not? Before reconciling with you, I spent many nights at bars with wealthy men. The child isn’t yours, but you must take responsibility.” Fang Yilin lost all composure, exposing the turmoil inside her. Ever since Wu Jiahao abandoned her, she’d been drifting from bar to bar, indulging in fleeting pleasures. She didn’t even know who the child’s father was.
“You… I never imagined you’d become so depraved. You’re no longer the Fang Yilin I once knew. I must have been blind not to see your true nature.” Du Bin was deeply shocked; the once pure woman had become vain after entering society, even selling her conscience for money.
“You’re so stubborn. I’ll have to hand you over to the benefactor as well.” Fang Yilin, disappointed in him, picked up her phone and dialed a number.
Soon, there was a knock at the door. Fang Yilin opened it, revealing a man—Du Bin recognized him as Tao Wenjie from the General Mountain Trio.
Seeing Du Bin’s expression, Tao Wenjie sneered, “What’s wrong? Not happy to see me?”
“Do you think I’d welcome you?”
“It seems you weren’t too affected. I won’t waste words.” Ignoring Du Bin, Tao Wenjie tried to take Ye Tang away, but Du Bin stepped in front, unleashing his lightning power to block him.
Tao Wenjie’s ability was metal; lightning couldn’t harm him at all. Seeing the doorway crowded with henchmen, Du Bin knew there was no way out.
Resolute, he picked up Ye Tang and jumped out the window, descending to the first floor at maximum speed. His lightning power greatly reduced the impact. The rented apartment was on the fifth floor, a significant height—any ordinary person would have been crippled or killed.
“Tch, you think you can escape?” Tao Wenjie transformed his right hand into a metal chain and flung it at them, aiming to ensnare Ye Tang before Du Bin landed.
On the way down, Du Bin had no means to fend off the chain. As it was about to wrap around them, a force burst from the shadows and struck the chain aside. Once he landed, Du Bin glimpsed a figure lurking in the darkness, reluctant to step forward.
He quickly climbed into a battered old Volkswagen van, fleeing with Ye Tang. Watching them disappear into the night, Tao Wenjie roared furiously at his men, “Go after them!”
Inside, only two remained. Fang Yilin, panicked, said, “She’s gone! What about my money?”
“You dare mention money? If you hadn’t hesitated, I’d have taken them away already. This wouldn’t have happened.” Tao Wenjie stalked toward her menacingly, grabbing her hair. His body liquefied into metallic fluid, enveloping Fang Yilin from foot to head. Moments later, the entire neighborhood heard a tremendous explosion from the fifth floor.
