Chapter 131: Vampire Genes
After hanging up the phone, Du Bin fell into deep thought once again. Combining the various questions he had been mulling over, he suddenly had a realization: "I understand now."
Du Bin found paper and a pen in the room and began to sketch out the events he had experienced, reorganizing his thoughts: "There are two types of R-vaccines. One is supplied for the market, and the other is the type used by the Armed Police. I remember witnessing the power of the vaccine before. I suspect that because it was incomplete at the time, many mutations occurred—for instance, the people at the Binxing Hotel who couldn't be killed by gunfire, Chen Zhuohao transforming into a multi-legged monster on the cruise ship, and more recently, Wu Qiwei’s body turning into nothingness after using the R-vaccine. Based on this, they have been constantly testing and improving it with experimental subjects over these past few years. Could it be that the current R-vaccine on the market is the finished product?"
"It must be. Otherwise, they wouldn't have rushed to put the product on sale. I suspect the reason the true R-vaccine can fuse various genetic codes is because it is mixed with that specific 'drug primer' as a medium. Professor Huang only detected the primer but didn't know what it was. My deduction is that it’s related to Xiao Tang’s father—it must have something to do with vampire genes. Was the deal Xiao Tang’s father made with Wu Qiwei meant to obtain his genes? Then Wu Qiwei handed the vampire genes over to Dr. She, who added them to the imperfect R-vaccine. Although I don't know the success rate, Xiao Tang’s body became incredibly abnormal—even capable of world-destroying feats—precisely because she possesses half vampire genes. If we assume this R-vaccine can instantly strengthen human bodily functions because of those vampire genes..." Du Bin rested his chin on his hand, analyzing in his mind, "If that assumption is true, the commercial R-vaccine could indeed be used medically, but since it doesn't cure every disease, it isn't perfect. Perhaps it’s the small amount of vampire genes that allows the elderly to throw away their canes and wheelchairs, or even brings vegetative patients back to consciousness. I’ve experienced this firsthand. If not for those vampire genes, perhaps these miracles wouldn't have happened."
Although everything was just a hypothesis, Du Bin finally managed to connect the tangled mist of confusion in his mind. He voiced a bold guess he had just formulated: "There is one more thing. Li Ning said that Li Ping and the members of the investigation team were unable to tear themselves away from the R-vaccine. What is that about... It seems only the professor can explain it."
Du Bin attempted to use his ability. Suddenly, lightning appeared in his hand. Seeing that it was blue, he was puzzled; hadn't it turned into golden lightning before? No matter how he tried, he couldn't change it back. Perhaps it was because his body was still weak. After comforting himself with that thought, he realized that his powers were slowly recovering. He couldn't suppress his excitement, thinking of how miserable he had been while being hunted: "Finally, I'm not a useless burden anymore. The days of relying on others for protection were truly suffocating."
A knock at the door sounded. Du Bin knew it was Tong Xiaoguo. With his permission, she opened the door: "The takeout is here. Let's eat!"
He stood up slowly. Tong Xiaoguo helped him disconnect the equipment and the IV drip, supporting him as he walked into the living room. "Thank you for taking care of me during this time. Actually, you didn't have to look after me. Why did you?"
"Our Snake Gang was wiped out by the boss of Doumen. They are hunting us down everywhere because of Zeng Yilong's orders. Since you have a deep connection with his wife, I hoped to use that relationship to help us. Consider this repayment for the day I saved you," Tong Xiaoguo said, picking up her spoon. Hearing this, Du Bin understood. It was a transaction. He nodded and said, "I'll try my best, although the person who caused her miscarriage was you."
After the meal, Du Bin returned to his room. He had to intensify his recovery. He also shared his theories with Aunt Lan, who agreed with his hypothesis, as she knew many things he didn't. After several days of resting and practicing his lightning powers, Helen rushed back to the rental apartment in a panic. Seeing Tong Xiaoguo, he said anxiously, "Guoguo, we've been exposed. We need to leave."
"They found us?" Tong Xiaoguo’s expression turned tense.
"They are on their way here," Helen said, packing his luggage by the sofa.
"Mr. Du, what are your plans? Are you coming with us?" she asked. Du Bin thought for a moment, then shook his head. "No, I still need to save my partner."
"Then... about that matter..."
Du Bin knew she was worried he would forget. He gave her his email address and said, "Don't worry, I won't forget what I promised. This is my email. If anything happens, send me a message."
After exchanging contact information, Du Bin parted ways with them. Less than ten minutes after they left, a group of gangsters stormed into the apartment. Finding no one, the lead boss immediately made a call. Upon receiving orders, he told his subordinates, "They shouldn't have gone far. Keep searching."
After leaving, Du Bin realized he didn't have a single cent on him. His face had been all over the news, and his identity was marked as "deceased" in the police system. He was at a loss. After thinking it over, he decided he had to steal a car. He found a secluded road, and to avoid security cameras, he turned up his collar to shield his face. Experienced as he was, he quickly managed to hotwire an older model car.
That night, Du Bin drove to the mental hospital and waited patiently until 2:00 AM before carefully approaching the fence. Seeing that it was quiet and deserted, he climbed over. He landed softly on the grass and crept along the fence toward the building. According to the intelligence provided by Sasha, Hu Guozheng was being held on the fifth floor.
Du Bin first went to the utility room and placed his hand on the electric meter. Lightning surged into the meter, instantly sparking and crackling. Within moments, the room couldn't handle the load and scorched, leaving the entire building in total darkness. The minor commotion immediately drew the attention of a nurse, who grabbed a flashlight and headed toward the utility room.
Taking advantage of the darkness, Du Bin sprinted toward the room where Hu Guozheng was kept. He reached the fifth floor and moved along the corridor. Hu Guozheng was just around the corner, but two armed policemen were sitting there on guard. To hide his identity, Du Bin donned a tiger mask he had snatched earlier.
Seeing them on high alert, Du Bin charged at them, condensing lightning in both hands. The guards didn't expect an ambush; they panicked for a split second before reaching for their guns. Du Bin, anticipating their move, struck each of them with a punch. The electricity surged through their bodies. As they suffered the effects of the shock, Du Bin exerted more force, rendering them instantly numb and unconscious as they slumped to the floor.
"Sleep tight for a while!" Having dealt with the guards, Du Bin was about to open the door when he heard a noise inside. The singing left him speechless. He opened the door to find the madman Hu Guozheng using a broom to mimic the moves of a character from *Dynasty Warriors*. He was chasing a cockroach, "releasing" his ultimate move.
First, it was a move from Zhou Yu, followed by a finger-flicking skill from Zhuge Liang, while the guy spat out dialogue: "Hey, pay with your life! Capture the strongholds on the east and west sides, surround Cao Xiu, and let everything return to peace! Defeat the enemy general..."
Du Bin watched, stunned. Finally, he knocked on the door to interrupt him. Hu Guozheng spat, then saw the familiar face at the door and became ecstatic. Du Bin gave him a signal, and he immediately gave an "OK" sign.
"Everyone, I'm perfectly normal. Thank you all for keeping me company for so long." Hu Guozheng handed the broom to one of the electrocuted guards. An hour later, when the nurses called for them, the two guards woke up and stared blankly at the empty room, completely dumbfounded.
The two drove back to the house Sasha had temporarily rented in the suburbs. Seeing that Sasha had prepared a meal, Hu Guozheng ignored them and sat down, devouring the food. Tears of happiness streamed down his face as he ate the long-awaited meal. "How wonderful it is to be able to eat such delicious food again."
Du Bin watched his messy eating habits. "Hey, did you never eat in your past life, or is this the Last Supper?"
"Damn it, you have no idea—the food there wasn't fit for human consumption. I haven't had a decent meal in ages," Hu Guozheng said between mouthfuls, spraying food everywhere.
Sasha, looking doting, wiped the grease from his face. Du Bin had wanted to sit down and eat, but feeling like a third wheel, he and Professor Huang found excuses to slip away, giving the couple some private space.
