Chapter 112: The Pursuit

Watching the driver pull up, Zeng Yilong and Qin Ling got into the car and headed back to the villa. Qin Ling noticed his sullen expression but said nothing. Suddenly, a phone rang. Seeing the caller ID, Zeng Yilong immediately stepped into the study. Curious, Qin Ling quietly crept to the door and pressed her ear against it to eavesdrop.
“Doctor, are you serious? You actually succeeded with the gene research?” Zeng Yilong connected the video to his computer and played it back. Sitting back in his chair with one leg crossed over the other, he pulled a box from the drawer, lit a cigar, and puffed thoughtfully.
In the video, Dr. She appeared disheveled, having worked day and night on the gene project. Though he looked haggard, his eyes shone with joy. “That’s right. I’ve also arranged the personnel you requested—each one is an elite among elites, carefully selected.”
“Good. Prepare the goods; I’ll contact the buyer in due time.”
“No problem. Oh, by the way, Tao Wenjie has returned, but his injuries are severe.” Dr. She switched the video feed to another scene where Tao Wenjie’s lower body was submerged in a metallic tank. Normally, his ability to absorb metal would have healed him easily, but after that hammer strike from Du Bin, his powers were severely depleted, preventing full absorption.
“Doctor, don’t you have extra vaccines? Let him try them. Without Wu Qiwei handling things, it’s still a bit troublesome.” Seeing Tao Wenjie’s condition, Zeng Yilong sighed. Since Wu Qiwei’s death, YOYO had vanished, and there was really no one around capable of dealing with Du Bin.
“That’s possible. If nothing urgent comes up, I’ll head to Guangzhou. Those infected have been confined by the police, and without Wu Qiwei, they’re worthless. I plan to donate the antidote vaccines under the institute’s name to enhance our reputation.”
“Alright. Tell them to wait for me there.” Zeng Yilong then shut the computer and walked out. Qin Ling, who had been eavesdropping, hurried back to the sofa and pretended to play on her phone.
Exiting the study, Zeng Yilong left straight away. Seeing his tense expression, Qin Ling suspected he was hiding something. Once he drove off, she immediately got into her own car and followed him, dialing Du Bin’s number. A lazy voice answered, “What’s up, Lingling?”
“Where are you now?” After a moment, Qin Ling spotted Zeng Yilong’s car ahead. Keeping a safe distance to avoid detection, she observed him heading toward Phoenix Mountain as they drove along Jin Feng Road.
Du Bin, hearing her driving, sounded curious, “What’s wrong? You can tell me over the phone.”

“Not convenient to say now. Call me when you arrive.”
“Alright, I’ll tell Aunt Lan. Should be there in about an hour and a half.” Judging by the urgency, Du Bin wasted no time after hanging up and quickly informed Aunt Lan. He and Hu Guozheng hurriedly got into the car and set off toward Zhuhai.
About ten minutes later, they arrived at a park at the foot of Phoenix Mountain. Zeng Yilong walked up the mountain, with Qin Ling following closely. Since it was nearly midnight, the crowds had dispersed. As they proceeded along the dark path, Qin Ling suddenly lost sight of him. Looking around at the silent surroundings, a creeping fear began to gnaw at her.
She wandered nearby for a long while but found nothing. Just as she was about to head back down, she noticed a group of people gathered at the center of a lake far below. Immediately, Qin Ling found a place to hide. The distance was too great to hear their conversation.
Suddenly, a dozen men charged down the mountain like a windstorm and vanished in an instant. Zeng Yilong soon left as well. When retrieving his car, he noticed a familiar vehicle nearby and sighed.
“Lingling, come out!”
Realizing her cover was blown, Qin Ling clicked her tongue silently and obediently stepped out from the trees. Seeing her, Zeng Yilong’s face darkened. “Why were you following me?”
“You’ve been acting suspicious lately. I suspected you were cheating, so I came to catch you in the act. This park is perfect for secret trysts at night. What’s the matter? Do you have some unspeakable secret?” Qin Ling feigned innocence. She knew revealing the real reason—eavesdropping on his call—would only make him more guarded, so she made up another excuse.
Zeng Yilong didn’t believe her, especially since she was too close to Du Bin and his group. But since she refused to confess, he didn’t press further. “How could that be? You know how I feel about you. You shouldn’t doubt me. Is your trust in me really that low?”
“Fair enough. But according to national surveys, the infidelity rate among newlyweds is quite high. So I can’t help but doubt you.”
“I understand. It’s normal for a newlywed wife to have such suspicions. No one’s to blame. So I haven’t let you down, have I?”
Zeng Yilong opened the car door. Qin Ling sensibly got into the passenger seat and snorted coldly, showing her displeasure. “Just barely. I haven’t caught you in any wrongdoing yet.”
Zeng Yilong then drove back to the villa. Time passed quickly. When Du Bin and Hu arrived in Zhuhai, they sent Qin Ling a message. She replied only that she was busy. They wisely found a nearby hotel. Tao Wenjie’s injuries were severe, but fortunately Aunt Lan’s powers helped ease his pain. Hu Guozheng, wrapped in bandages, laughed heartily.

“You’re still laughing? Laugh all you want; it might kill you.” Tao Wenjie glared at him, annoyed. Despite being stronger, he was the most severely injured.
“I’m happy, and I like it,” Hu Guozheng replied with a quirky tongue-out expression.
Du Bin sighed, turning over and closing his eyes. “Enough. I’m going to sleep.”
“Think you can sleep?” Hu Guozheng teased.
Annoyed, Du Bin retorted, “What do you mean?”
“You know perfectly well; no need to ask.” Hu Guozheng spread his hands, refusing to elaborate. Seeing Du Bin silent, he added, “Your powers haven’t recovered yet. Let me, your fatty, protect you.”
“Yeah, right. I’ve probably died in more fights than I can count under your ‘protection.’”
Hu Guozheng dropped the subject and lay down to sleep. Soon, his snores filled the room. Tao Wenjie, restless and dissatisfied, left the guest room and climbed onto the rooftop.
Sitting alone on the ground, gazing into the vast night over Zhuhai, his longing grew even stronger. “Where are you, really?”
