A Few Words

I have been writing this book as a newcomer for nearly two months now, so I wanted to say a few words.

This is the first book I ever signed a contract for, and its results have been far from what I hoped. On one hand, it is simply too niche: a civilization-style story about Skaven ratmen, niche even among niche works. While it was being serialized and attracting readers, I gained 1,300 new favorites, and by the usual standards I should have advanced without trouble. But my ratio of follows to subscriptions was far too low—in other words, too many readers were only stocking it up for later, and I never had the chance to move forward.

Aside from some flaws in the way it was written, the book has two very serious problems.

First, I got the pacing of the Skaven ratmen wrong. I should have brought the underground kingdom forward into the third volume and placed the war of founding the realm there instead. I did not do that, and as a result I lost a great deal of traffic, while many readers came away thinking I was not really writing Skaven ratmen at all. That was the first mistake.

Second, I made it too tragic. I put too much of my own emotion into it. A novel is supposed to be lively and exhilarating, but that caused me to drift badly from the main line. I finished the second act, but I truly could not write the third act any farther...

Over these two months, I do not know how many times I wanted to give up. Until now, I really have not been able to hold on any longer. In my editor’s words, I lack the instincts needed for web fiction.

I cannot treat writing online fiction as though I am telling my own sorrowful life story.

These two fatal flaws have directly ruined the future of this book. It is deeply painful.
