Chapter 5: Everything Was Merely a Performance

Xinfeng City, South Gate.
Bang—
As dusk descended and evening approached, Qin Lang and his companions finally arrived at the city. No sooner had he landed from the flying sword than his legs began to tremble, a sore and unsteady sensation overwhelming him.
However, with his formidable willpower, he managed to stand there, albeit swaying slightly, his face a shade paler than usual.
He simply couldn’t comprehend why Liu Man was so enamored with speed and thrill. Did the man not realize that such recklessness could easily cost them their lives?
Glancing at Liu Man beside him, Qin Lang’s expression darkened. “Brother Liu, could we please not do this next time? You may be unafraid, but I most certainly am. If we were to fall from the sky by accident, we’d be nothing but a heap of broken bones.”
“Hahaha—”
Slap—
With a hearty laugh, Liu Man patted Qin Lang’s left shoulder gently, a smile on his face. “Brother Qin, you worry too much. I’ve been flying swords for years and not once have I made a mistake. How could I possibly let us fall?”
“Heh—”
Wearing a bitter smile, Qin Lang shook his head lightly. “Brother Liu, even the most experienced drivers don’t claim their driving is always smooth. For you to have such confidence, I must say I admire your nerve.”
Liu Man: “……”
Was he truly so untrustworthy?
In over a decade of cultivation, he had never erred in sword flight.
Why was this young fellow before him so suspicious?
But all things considered, the lad was rather amusing…
Seeing Qin Lang’s look of disbelief, Hua Manlou, standing nearby, spoke up, “Brother Qin, there’s no need to worry so much. Brother Liu’s swordsmanship is top-notch. Even if you don’t trust him, you should trust me.”
At his words, Qin Lang shook his head softly. “It’s not that I don’t trust Brother Liu, it’s just that I’m not quite the same as you all.”
“Heh—” Su Momo sneered, her gaze full of disdain as she looked at Qin Lang. “A coward is a coward, stop making excuses for yourself.”
Despite his reputation as the ‘Slayer of Thousands,’ she still regarded him with utter contempt.
In this world where everyone pursued immortality, anyone who was not a cultivator was simply a worthless wretch. Even if one possessed some special ability, unless one became a cultivator, they would forever be looked down upon.
Qin Lang: “……”
His face darkened inexplicably, left speechless.
What had he done to provoke this girl? Why did every word she uttered seem so barbed?
Was he truly so unlikable?
Just as Qin Lang was about to retort, Wang Zimo—now dressed as a man—shook his head gently and said, “Momo, you shouldn’t say that. We’re cultivators, but Brother Qin is a mortal. His fear of heights is only natural.”

“Wang Qianqian, I don’t usually care for your words, but this time, I find them quite agreeable.”
Agreeing with Wang Zimo, Hua Manlou shifted his gaze to Su Momo. “Demoness Su, if you were a mortal, you’d be even more terrified than Brother Qin.”
“You all—!”
“Hmph!”
Seeing both of them take sides against her, as if she had said something wrong, Su Momo gritted her teeth in fury and shot Qin Lang a fierce glare.
Once again becoming the target of her ire, Qin Lang’s expression twitched. Inwardly, he grumbled: Had this woman been kicked in the head by a donkey?
As the quarrel continued, Liu Man hurried to smooth things over. “Enough, everyone, let’s not argue. We should find a place to rest and set out again tomorrow.”
…
They temporarily rented a courtyard of five pavilions within the city, settling in and assigning rooms.
“Ah—” Qin Lang yawned, looking at the earnest Liu Man before him. “Brother Liu, can’t we just sleep first and talk about everything tomorrow?”
He was utterly exhausted and longed only to collapse into bed.
If not for Liu Man’s insistence on a discussion, he would have run straight to his room.
After a day’s journey, he felt drained to his very bones and only wished for sleep to wash away his fatigue.
Seeing Qin Lang’s weariness, Liu Man shook his head slightly. “If you’re really that tired, go ahead and rest. We have some matters to discuss among ourselves, and I’ll fill you in tomorrow.”
Considering his own exhaustion, Qin Lang replied, “Then you all talk. I’ll go sleep first.”
Yawning, he trudged off to his room without a backward glance.
Creak!
Bang!
Arriving at the pavilion, Qin Lang pushed open the door, stumbled inside, and closed it behind him.
He spotted a comfortable bed, and without even removing his clothes, fell upon it and was asleep in an instant.
Had the four outside seen this scene, they would have been utterly astonished…
With doubt in her heart, Su Momo looked at Liu Man. “Brother Liu, I really don’t understand why Deputy Commander Wang insisted we bring this mortal along—just because he’s the ‘Slayer of Thousands’?”
Catching monsters was a matter of life and death; a single misstep could mean instant doom.
They had witnessed countless comrades fall in the line of duty, yet regardless, they always pressed on with their missions, whether it was capturing demons or vanquishing evil.

But now, bringing along a mere mortal was akin to shouldering a burden.
Liu Man remained silent, his gaze fixed on the distant pavilion. Confirming that Qin Lang was sound asleep inside, he finally spoke.
“Of course not. The commander had us bring him not only because he can restrain charm demons, but also because he killed Prince Liu An of Pingnan.”
Gasp—
At his words, the three drew in a sharp breath. Though Liu Man’s explanation was brief, the implications sent chills down their spines.
Prince Liu An of Pingnan had colluded with demons, plotting to plunge the Immortal Dynasty into chaos—a path of certain death.
Yet before he could reveal their schemes, he was slain on the spot by Qin Lang, whose mind was now filled with the prince’s memories.
Now, Qin Lang knew, at least in part, of Liu An’s collusion with the demons and their plans.
For the demons, his death was imperative to safeguard their designs. For the Immortal Dynasty, he was a necessary bait…
“Brat, get up! Stop sleeping! This Lord Cat has something to say to you. If you don’t get up, I’ll fart on your face!”
A crisp voice rang in his ears. Qin Lang groggily opened his eyes, bewildered by his surroundings. “Where am I?”
“Wasn’t I just sleeping? How did I suddenly end up in this strange place?”
The scenery was peculiar—stars glittered above and below, everything around him was void, as if he’d been flung into a chaotic world.
He distinctly remembered collapsing onto his bed, only to awaken in this unfamiliar realm.
“Stop wondering. This is your space world.”
Following the voice, Qin Lang saw an adorable, plump cat floating lazily in the air. Its fur was mostly yellow with patches of white, and its eyes were large and bright.
Glancing around, confirming they were alone, Qin Lang asked in confusion, “Was that you talking to me just now?”
The yellow-and-white cat looked at him with disdain. “Who else would it be? It’s just you and Lord Cat here—do you think there’s a third person?”
“Damn, the cat’s talking! The cat’s become a spirit!”
Certain he hadn’t misheard, Qin Lang leapt to his feet in fright, stumbling backward to keep a safe distance.
Yellow-and-white cat: “???”
