Chapter 28: After the Shock, Internal Strife
Mu Tian City, City Lord’s Residence, Inner Hall.
Murong Feiyun, the City Lord of Mu Tian City, had just learned of the appearance of the Berserk Immortals. At this moment, his anxiety was palpable; he paced back and forth, waiting for Shangguan Lieyang to return.
Earlier, he had been indulging in nightly pleasures with his concubine, preparing for a passionate tryst, only to be interrupted just as he was about to consummate his desires. His steward had come seeking him. Furious, Murong Feiyun had intended to unleash his anger and punish the steward for disturbing his night, making him understand the consequences of disrupting such moments.
But unexpectedly, the steward brought news of Berserk Immortals appearing within the city. Instantly, Murong Feiyun’s mood plummeted; his anger dissipated, replaced by panic.
“If anything happens, not only will I lose my position, but my head may roll as well,” he muttered to himself. “Damn it! How did those Berserk Immortals get into the city? If I find out someone brought them in, I’ll tear him apart, limb from limb!”
While Murong Feiyun paced nervously, Shangguan Lieyang hurried into the hall. Upon entering, he dropped to one knee, his expression grave. “Reporting to the City Lord: the three Berserk Immortals have already escaped the city.”
“What? They escaped?” Murong Feiyun’s face changed dramatically—he turned pale and collapsed onto the floor, cold sweat pouring down his back.
The Berserk Immortals had escaped; this was an unforgivable crime. Even his family might be implicated.
Seeing Murong Feiyun crumpled on the ground, Shangguan Lieyang grew alarmed. “City Lord, are you alright?”
Noticing Shangguan Lieyang’s concern, Murong Feiyun tried to compose himself, but Shangguan Lieyang quickly reassured him, “City Lord, you need not worry. Although those Berserk Immortals escaped, their target was the Azure Sky Guard. Therefore, we needn’t fear the Immortal Dynasty blaming us.”
“The Azure Sky Guard?”
“Wait.” Murong Feiyun’s eyes lit up; he fixed his gaze on Shangguan Lieyang. “You’re saying you saw the Azure Sky Guard?”
“Yes,” Shangguan Lieyang nodded solemnly. “Though I only glimpsed Hanmanlou, I could tell at a glance that the young man attacked by the Berserk Immortals was undoubtedly Hanmanlou.”
Certain he had not misheard, Murong Feiyun’s heart surged with excitement.
If the Azure Sky Guard was attacked by Berserk Immortals, it meant they had provoked them—or perhaps the Berserk Immortals’ true target was the Guard.
In this case, Murong Feiyun and his people would remain unscathed.
Even if higher authorities investigated, they would not be severely punished.
As Murong Feiyun breathed a sigh of relief, Shangguan Lieyang suddenly spoke, “City Lord, there were three Berserk Immortals in Mu Tian City this time, and all of them are at the Transformation stage.”
“What?” Murong Feiyun was startled, staring in disbelief at Shangguan Lieyang. “Three Berserk Immortals, all at the Transformation stage? Are you certain?”
“Yes, every word I’ve spoken is true,” Shangguan Lieyang replied with a bitter smile. “Not only that, I saw it with my own eyes.”
Though he had not fought them, he was sure that if all three attacked him at once, even if he managed to kill them, it would cost him his life.
Berserk Immortals were not ordinary cultivators; even the top cultivators feared them deeply.
After all, Berserk Immortals possessed not only formidable combat prowess but were unrivaled within their realm.
Murong Feiyun’s expression froze.
Outside Mu Tian City, three imposing middle-aged men gathered—these were the Berserk Immortals who had attacked Qin Lang and his companions. Yet suddenly, one of them lashed out at another.
His Tang blade whirled in a frenzy, its gleaming edge flashing menacingly as blade energy surged around him. In just a few breaths, the two exchanged dozens of blows.
Bursts of blade light swept the surroundings, ancient trees were sliced apart, boulders cleaved, scars of battle scattered everywhere.
Under the onslaught, the attacked man’s face grew cold. “Chen Tianbao, what are you playing at? Why attack me?”
“You dare accuse me? Do you even have the right?” Chen Tianbao’s gaze was icy, murderous intent blazing in his eyes. “Tell me—why did you try to kill the Young Master? Have you betrayed our master?”
With a clang, Chen Tianbao’s Tang blade slashed fiercely, its chilling light stretching several yards.
Seeing the deadly attack, Li Weijie dodged quickly, counterattacking with lethal speed.
Li Weijie, brows furrowed, replied darkly as he evaded, “Don’t spout nonsense! Even if everyone else betrayed the master, I never would.”
“If you haven’t betrayed the master, why did you attack the Young Master, and why did you urge us to target him together?”
“What do you mean? When did I attack the Young Master?” Li Weijie was even more confused, utterly bewildered.
The third middle-aged man, watching from the side, was equally puzzled. He stared at Chen Tianbao, unable to grasp the meaning behind his words.
Young Master?
Could it be...
Frowning, he joined the fray, and as the two fought, he kicked Li Weijie aside and seized Chen Tianbao’s sleeve.
“Chen Tianbao, you said you saw the Young Master—is that true? Do you know where he is now?”
Pushing the man away, Chen Tianbao sheathed his weapon, his eyes murderous as he glared at Li Weijie.
His only desire was to finish Li Weijie, to tear him apart, strip his flesh, and grind his bones to dust.
“Stop pretending—speak up!”
After calming himself, Chen Tianbao turned to Li Weijie. “Ask him yourself—see what he’s been making us do.”
Luo Jiang glanced at Chen Tianbao, then at Li Weijie, utterly baffled, as though lost in a haze.
He wasn’t the only one confused—Li Weijie was equally at a loss.
“Old Li, what’s going on? What does Old Chen mean?”
Li Weijie answered coolly, “How should I know? I’m just as confused as you are.”
Just as Chen Tianbao was about to say something, seeing Li Weijie’s confusion, he too began to doubt.
Could it be that Li Weijie didn’t know about the Young Master?
Chen Tianbao narrowed his eyes, fixing his gaze on Li Weijie. “You don’t know who the young man we’re supposed to kill is?”
Li Weijie replied, “How would I know? All I know is that if we kill him, the Li family will give us clues about the Young Master.”
“Hmph!” Chen Tianbao snorted coldly, his tone glacial. “Do you know that the Li family wants you to kill a young man whose left shoulder bears a Blood Wolf totem?”
“What? Blood Wolf totem?”
The two men were instantly shocked upon hearing this.
