Chapter Ninety-Two: Gentle as Jade, with an Exceptional Bearing
Suzhen gave Wu Chenghao a cold glance, then let go.
Wu Chenghao’s body immediately went limp and slid heavily to the floor.
“Stop! You dare lay a hand on Mr. Wu? You’re looking for death!” the deputy general manager roared, finally snapping out of his stupor. He charged forward in a fury.
Several other managers came with him, none willing to stand by and watch Suzhen’s violence continue unchecked.
“What are you standing there for? Call security!” the deputy general manager shouted at the secretary, who was frozen stiff with fear.
Smack!
Smack, smack...
With a chill in his expression, Suzhen casually swept his arm out, batting every one of those who came near him flying backward!
The entire conference room froze.
The others who had been preparing to rush in turned deathly pale, trembling so hard they did not dare so much as fart. Suzhen’s brutal display had scared them senseless; several who had already rolled up their sleeves even lowered them again without thinking.
“Are you sure you want to call security?” Suzhen asked with a faint smile, glancing at the secretary, whose hand was shaking as she held the phone.
“If word gets out that Wu Chenghao got turned into that pig-faced wreck and was seen by security, do you think he’ll let you off? Of course, I don’t mind how many people you call up here. At worst, I’ll just send them all flying too.”
Arrogant.
Utterly arrogant.
His words were no different from saying, I hit you, and you still can’t do a thing to me.
The crowd burned with indignation, feeling outrageously unconvinced. Did they really think their Mr. Wu was some soft target? Even if they did not hire someone to kill Suzhen, at the very least they would call the authorities and have him arrested.
At that moment, Suzhen crouched down in front of Wu Chenghao and pinched the philtrum beneath his nose.
Wu Chenghao slowly opened his eyes and woke. The instant he saw Suzhen, he jolted in terror, his eyes filled with fear and shock.
He had never imagined that this spineless waste everyone looked down on could reveal such a ruthless and intimidating side.
“Wu Chenghao, it seems your underlings want to report me. What should we do?”
Suzhen looked down at him unhurriedly, the chill in his eyes deepening once more.
“How about this: later, the two of us can go turn ourselves in together. That way I can properly tell them how you hired Baldy and the others to kill me, so you won’t feel wronged.”
Wu Chenghao’s face changed drastically at once. He had not expected Suzhen to already know about this; it looked like those useless men with Baldy had failed.
He knew that if they really called the authorities, it would only be worse for him. Clutching at the pain on his face, he hurriedly rasped, “D-don’t. Don’t call the authorities. None of you can call the authorities. I’m fine, I’m—hiss...”
As soon as he spoke, he tugged at the wounds on his face again. Pain distorted his features, his mouth twisted and his eyes skewed, cold sweat breaking out across his forehead.
The secretary’s hand froze in midair. She held the phone, but no longer dared dial.
“Good. At least you know how to behave.”
Suzhen looked at Wu Chenghao, his tone calm, yet carrying a terrifying chill. “This time I came away unharmed, so... you still get to live.”
Wu Chenghao shuddered again. His chest burned hot, and he nearly coughed up a mouthful of blood.
He felt a wave of bitter fury. You came away unharmed, and you still beat me into this state?
“However, to prevent you from making the same mistake again, I ought to help you remember this a little.”
The instant the words fell, Suzhen moved swiftly, seized Wu Chenghao’s left hand, caught his thumb, and bent it viciously backward.
Crack!
The sound of bone snapping rang out. Wu Chenghao’s body jerked violently, his face freezing in an instant before he let out a shrill, agonized scream. The searing pain even drained some color from his swollen face, leaving it pallid.
Everyone in the room was instantly frightened to the point of losing all color, so terrified they did not dare utter a single word.
“This matter ends here. Let’s call it even.”
Suzhen stood, clapped his hands, and turned to leave.
But just as he reached the doorway, he suddenly stopped, glanced back, and said coolly,
“Also, I advise you not to offend Mu Xue again. Otherwise, I’ll make you regret ever being born.”
In the grip of such agony, Wu Chenghao could hardly pay attention to Suzhen’s “advice.” Once Suzhen had gone, he gritted his teeth and said viciously, “Suzhen, I’ll tear you to pieces!”
“Mr. Wu, are you all right?” The deputy general manager nearby struggled over to help him up, enduring his own pain as he decided to look after his boss first.
“Mr. Wu, we should get to the hospital quickly!”
Together with the others nearby, he helped Wu Chenghao to his feet.
“Remember this: not one of you is to say a single word about what happened today. Understand?” Wu Chenghao, once upright, swept a cold glare across everyone in the room and bellowed in rage. His chest was stuffed full of resentment.
He had been beaten, but he had to swallow this humiliation. Otherwise, if people learned that he had been beaten like this by a useless live-in son-in-law, he would never be able to hold his head up again in Green City.
Suzhen did not leave immediately after coming out of the conference room. He first went to the front desk and used a tissue to wipe the blood spatter from his sleeve, then departed with an expression of calm indifference.
To him, it was as if he had not been beating some company boss at all, but merely kicked aside a barking dog he happened to encounter on the road.
After leaving Wu Chenghao’s company, Suzhen did not go straight home. Instead, he took a taxi to the driving school.
Without a license, he could not drive, and taking a cab every time he went out was far too troublesome. Suzhen decided to get his driver’s license as soon as possible.
After registering, paying, and arranging a time with the driving instructor, Suzhen went to the villa where his mother lived.
Recently, Suzhen had been visiting his mother often. Each time he stayed for half a day, and sometimes he would run into Qiao Lan, who often brought over plenty of tonics, leaving Yutui Lei deeply grateful.
This time, from his mother, he learned that Qiao Lan had apparently run into some trouble in business over the past couple of days, which was why she had not appeared.
Suzhen had originally wanted to call Qiao Lan to ask whether she needed help, but on second thought, apart from treating illnesses, he could not really help with business matters. Calling would only make him seem falsely courteous.
He had lunch with his mother before heading to Liyuan Residence.
When he got home and opened the door, he saw Chen Jianguo and Lu Hongmei busily tidying the living room, muttering all the while.
“Oh, old man, don’t move that vase. Just leave it there; it looks nice! Go empty that ashtray of yours, it stinks!”
“And that bag of yours, hurry up and take it into the room. Don’t let the two sisters-in-law see it later, or they’ll start asking questions about your work again!”
“Don’t rush me. I’m moving the plant stand right now, aren’t I? Look at this mess you’ve made of the house, all because you love growing flowers!”
“And when the two sisters-in-law from your family come later, say as little as possible about Mu Xue. Even if they ask, we won’t take the bait, so they don’t get another chance to show off. Listening to them gives me a headache!”
“You’re the one with a headache? Isn’t it all because of that worthless good-for-nothing? Ah, how I wish our son-in-law were Chenghao instead. Though it is odd—I was just about to ask whether Chenghao was around and have him come help us put on a proper face, but I couldn’t even get through to him. Strange, really strange!”
