Chapter 150: Two Little Kittens
Chen Muxue’s voice sounded somewhat unnatural. Had she not tried her best to suppress the turmoil in her heart, she probably would not have been able to finish speaking.
“Uh...” Su Zheng was stunned when he heard her, but he quickly composed himself, smiled, and nodded.
“What are you grinning at? Don’t get the wrong idea. I’m just worried you’ll wake up with a headache after drinking tonight. Hmph!”
As soon as Chen Muxue finished speaking, her pretty face flushed as red as a piece of cloth. Even she did not believe the things she had just said...
When the two of them returned home, they discovered that Chen Jianguo and his wife were not there.
Worried that something might have happened to her parents at the ancestral residence, Chen Muxue called her father.
“Dad, why haven’t you and Mom come home yet? Has Grandma returned from overseas?”
There was a moment of silence on the other end before Chen Jianguo’s suspicious voice came through.
“Muxue, your mother and I are still at the ancestral residence. You’re clever—help us figure this out. We just ran into your eldest uncle here, and he said that your grandmother plans to settle overseas permanently and won’t be coming back. This... this is far too sudden, isn’t it?”
“What?!”
Chen Muxue’s pretty face froze, and an inexplicable look of astonishment appeared in her eyes.
“Dad, didn’t you ask Uncle why Grandma suddenly wants to settle overseas? She used to dislike foreign food the most. Besides, Grandma is already so old. How could she possibly settle abroad by herself?”
“Exactly. That’s what I thought too, so I wanted to get a clear explanation. But your uncle insisted that the old lady was going to settle overseas and refused to say anything more. Now he’s left your mother and me standing here—he just walked away!”
Chen Jianguo sounded helpless over the phone. Clearly, he and Lu Hongmei were still at the ancestral residence.
Su Zheng had heard the entire conversation from beside her, and his eyes narrowed slightly.
He knew Chen Xiong well. There was definitely something suspicious about this matter!
“Muxue, we can’t explain everything over the phone. Let’s go to the ancestral residence now and get to the bottom of it.”
Chen Muxue thought he was right. After exchanging a few brief words with Chen Jianguo, she hung up.
She also knew that if her eldest uncle was deliberately concealing her grandmother’s whereabouts, her parents would never get anything out of him.
Her grandmother had been rather harsh with her over the past two years, but when she was young, her grandmother had loved her dearly. It was only after she married Su Zheng, along with the death of her grandfather, that her grandmother had gradually grown distant.
She was worried that something might have happened to her grandmother. The two of them hurried downstairs, got into the car, and drove straight to the Chen family’s ancestral residence.
When they arrived, they saw two people standing outside the main gate, anxiously peering into the darkness.
They were Chen Jianguo and Lu Hongmei. Knowing that their daughter was coming, they had not left and had continued waiting there.
“Dad, Mom, why are you standing outside in the middle of the night? Where’s my eldest uncle?!”
After getting out of the car, Chen Muxue saw the fury on her parents’ faces and frowned.
“Ah! We were sitting in the main hall just now, but when your uncle heard that you two were coming, he rudely drove your mother and me out. He said it was late and that they needed to rest.”
Chen Jianguo spoke indignantly.
He still felt humiliated when he thought about being driven out by the servants. No matter what, he was a member of the Chen family—and now the honorary director of the Qingyang Museum. Being treated like that at the ancestral residence was something he found difficult to swallow.
“How dare they do this?! That’s outrageous!”
Angry, Chen Muxue moved toward the door to knock.
“Stop, darling!”
Chen Jianguo hurriedly grabbed her.
“Have you forgotten those two huge black dogs at the ancestral residence? Your uncle just said that if you dared to knock again, he would set the dogs on you...”
“Yes, darling. Why don’t we go home for now? I’ll ask your aunt about it tomorrow. It’s too late to argue with them tonight.”
Lu Hongmei also stopped Chen Muxue helplessly.
“Hmph! What does he mean by this? Has he completely forgotten that we’re family? No, I’m calling the authorities. Let’s see what he has to say when the police arrive!”
Even more furious, Chen Muxue reached for her phone.
The ancestral residence was where the old lady lived, and every member of the Chen family had the right to enter. What right did her eldest uncle have to treat it as his private home, threaten to set dogs on people, and bar her parents from entering?
“Muxue, calm down.”
Su Zheng remained composed. He glanced at the tightly shut gate of the ancestral residence and then said seriously,
“I don’t think calling the police will help much. Since your uncle dares to act this way, he must already have prepared a countermeasure. Even if the police come, he’ll have a way to keep us from entering.”
“Then... are we just going to let this go? We still don’t know what’s happened to Grandma!”
Chen Muxue frowned at Su Zheng unwillingly, anxiety and concern written across her face.
Judging from her eldest uncle’s abnormal behavior, the story about the old lady settling overseas might well be completely fabricated. If that was the case, then her grandmother’s current condition was truly worrying.
“Of course not. We’ll simply go in. It’s easy.”
Su Zheng smiled calmly. Ignoring Chen Muxue’s astonished expression and her parents’ attempts to stop him, he walked straight up to the gate and placed his hand against it.
The gate of the Chen family’s ancestral residence was made of rosewood. It was not only impressive but extremely sturdy. Yet Su Zheng merely applied a slight forward push.
Crack!
A snapping sound came from the bolt behind the gate.
The next moment, Su Zheng pushed the gate open.
“Woof! Woof! Woof, woof, woof!”
Almost at the same time, two furious barks rang out. Two enormous black shadows burst from beneath the porch, lunging at Su Zheng with savage ferocity.
“Ah...!”
Chen Muxue instinctively cried out, unable to bear the thought of seeing Su Zheng knocked to the ground by the vicious dogs.
Chen Jianguo and Lu Hongmei also wore frightened expressions and braced themselves.
At that instant, a murderous glint surfaced in Su Zheng’s clear eyes, and a chilling aura spread from his body.
The two black dogs abruptly halted in mid-lunge, as though they had sensed something terrifying. A moment earlier, they had been barking with their jaws wide open, their sharp teeth bared. Now, they lay prostrate on the ground, whimpering softly in obvious surrender.
“Uh... this...”
Chen Jianguo and Lu Hongmei stared in astonishment. They had never imagined that the two ferocious black dogs guarding the ancestral residence would become as docile as a pair of kittens in Su Zheng’s presence.
How was that possible?
Even Chen Muxue was astonished, though she remained relatively calm. She walked up to Su Zheng and curiously examined the two obedient dogs.
“Darling, don’t get so close! Let him drive the dogs away first, then we’ll go in!”
Chen Jianguo shouted a warning. Even now, he still could not believe that Su Zheng had subdued the two enormous animals.
“Get lost! What are you doing here? Do you know what time it is? Does everyone here have to stay awake all night?!”
At that moment, a furious shout came from inside the gate. Chen Xiong emerged from the shadows with a group of servants behind him.
