Chapter Thirty: I Don't Have a Mech
After dinner, Xuanxuan’s request to sleep was naturally denied. Only after Zhan Yu left, did Wan Qi Lianhao finally allow her to return to her bedroom, having made her walk around the room for quite some time.
Once back in her own bedroom, Xuanxuan took out the pendant she had just put away. Such powerful spatial abilities, and such strong spiritual energy—she was astonished that someone in this world could wield spatial powers to this extent. She stood there in a slight daze, then used her mental strength to open the pendant.
It was indeed a space, though not large, yet very stable. Even Xuanxuan might not be able to break it open.
The entire space contained nothing but a small bookshelf. Xuanxuan took out a book, and was immediately dumbfounded. How could she have overlooked this? Here she was, the most knowledgeable alchemist of the Mata continent, reduced to illiteracy in this place. The characters all seemed to recognize her, but she couldn’t recognize them.
Frustrated, she tossed the book back onto the shelf, her face bitter as she connected her intelligence brain to the Star Net and logged in.
Seeing her tiny, empty room, she decided to visit the Green World, wandering around back and forth. Xuanxuan’s heart felt unsettled—so many things she couldn’t buy, not because she lacked money, but because she had nowhere to store them.
Having money but unable to buy anything, she drooped her head in frustration.
After returning to his own place, Zhan Yu then logged onto the Star Net. Without thinking, he found himself in the Green World, and there he saw the person who had occupied his mind all day.
He watched as she wandered about, buying nothing, her head lowered. Recalling her ability to spend money, Zhan Yu wondered if she had run out of funds.
He walked over, “Is there anything I can help you with?”
Xuanxuan turned to see Zhan Yu. Why was he always appearing before her today? Still, she thought he looked much more handsome in reality; his appearance here was merely pleasing to the eye.
Thinking she had accepted his pendant, she ought to be nicer to him. He himself had said she could ask for help with anything, so asking a question wouldn’t hurt. Xuanxuan asked, “Do you know where I can buy a spatial ring?”
Zhan Yu was taken aback—spatial ring, had this girl been reading too many novels?
Seeing his surprise, Xuanxuan asked again, “How about a spatial pouch?”
Zhan Yu shook his head.
Xuanxuan sighed softly—this was not good news. “Then where do you put the things you buy?”
Only then did Zhan Yu realize her problem was insufficient storage. “You can upgrade your inventory.”
Xuanxuan’s eyes lit up, “Where?”
“In the Imperial Capital—it just requires completing a task.”
The Star Net was set up much like a typical online game, with numerous tasks to complete. On Star Net, there was nothing you couldn’t obtain—if you could finish the tasks. Its slogan was: ‘If you can imagine it, Star Net can do it.’
And Star Net was indeed evolving accordingly. Just as with the volcanic potion this girl had crafted.
Xuanxuan was dispirited—it sounded troublesome.
Seeing her head bowed, Zhan Yu, almost against his own will, said, “I’ll take you.”
Xuanxuan didn’t sense anything amiss; for her, it was good news. In a strange place, having someone guide her was a fortunate thing. She nodded happily, ready to cling to him for support.
To promote public understanding of the insect race and strengthen human combat capabilities, nearly all tasks on Star Net involved exterminating insect creatures. The inventory upgrade mission was no exception; everyone undertook it, so it wasn’t particularly difficult, just located in areas occupied by the insect race.
Zhan Yu led Xuanxuan away from the Imperial Star, to the nearest planet infested by insects. He summoned his mecha—black, imposing, yet elegant, which he called “Solaris.”
“This is my mecha, Solaris. Bring out your own mecha. Encountering insects will be dangerous.”
Xuanxuan looked at him blankly. Her mecha? She had none. “I don’t have a mecha.”
Zhan Yu was surprised. Was there really someone on Star Net without a mecha? She must be from another planet—surely.
Every newcomer to Star Net would claim their own mecha immediately. If they had no money, they could select the basic military model; with funds, they might order one or commission a custom build. This was common knowledge in the Federation, where martial prowess prevailed; hardly anyone would forgo claiming their mecha. Thus, Zhan Yu was certain she hailed from an alien system.
Although Star Net’s mechas simulated those in reality, there was one difference: only one person could exist within a mecha. Normally, this wasn’t an issue—after all, it wasn’t real life, and everyone had their own mecha, so rarely would two people share one. But no one had anticipated someone without a mecha.
Zhan Yu hadn’t expected it either. Out in the wilderness, purchasing one wasn’t possible. He was about to suggest returning to the Imperial Star to buy a mecha.
But then, he saw the girl before him rise gently, like a white butterfly. Her dress fluttered like wings, chestnut hair swirling in the air, each strand seeming to drift into his heart. He felt a strange tingling, an itch, a curious sensation.
He had never seen such long hair. Suddenly, a phrase came to mind: “Wait till my hair reaches my waist—will you marry me?”
“Yes,” Zhan Yu thought. If a girl with long chestnut hair in a white dress stood before him and asked this, he would surely answer yes.
“Yes to what?” Xuanxuan was already perched on the left shoulder of the mecha. The metallic texture paired with such a gentle girl ought to be incongruous, but Zhan Yu found it strikingly beautiful.
He snapped out of his reverie, hearing Xuanxuan’s question. He hesitated, recalling the scene, and felt as if the 1013th time he had gazed at her had finally left a mark on his heart.
“Let’s go,” Xuanxuan said, oblivious to his strange behavior.
Zhan Yu felt the warmth in his cheeks subside. Then, looking up at her seriously, he said, “You’ll be in danger like this.”
Xuanxuan looked down at him. How nice—at last he had to look up at her. “It’s fine. I can protect myself.”
Zhan Yu recalled that agate-colored volcanic potion and felt that this mysterious girl must have her own means. As long as he maintained ranged attacks and did not venture deep into the insect territory, things should be safe enough.
He still had some faith in his own abilities.
