Chapter 60: Sweet Girl Jiang Sui
“Jiang Sui…” Lin Hui wanted to say something, but the words caught in her throat. In the end, she couldn’t help but ask, “Are you… all right?”
She truly had been moved by the Jiang Sui before her. Yet today, Jiang Sui’s behavior was so out of the ordinary that Lin Hui wondered if she had been possessed, or if something had jolted her so deeply that she’d suddenly awakened to a new understanding.
Lin Hui wasn’t the only one to think this. The others of the Shen family shared her suspicions. Still, it was undeniable that, at this moment, the loathing they once felt upon seeing Jiang Sui had faded from their eyes.
“Mom, I’m fine.” Jiang Sui took a deep breath and nodded seriously.
Yet that very gesture made Lin Hui’s heart ache a little. Had she perhaps been too harsh with her just now?
Shen Xiangdong cleared his throat. “Well, Jiang Sui, actually, you don’t need to apologize. You haven’t done anything wrong. You’re still a child—having these thoughts is perfectly normal. But you and your mother really shouldn’t be at such odds. As the saying goes, even if bones are broken, the sinews still connect them.”
He had always felt sorry for Jiang Sui. After Jiang Sui lost her father, he had wanted to bring her into his home and raise her as his own daughter. But the child had met him and Lin Hui with nothing but a storm of angry words.
That had made it difficult for him to draw close. Yet today, Jiang Sui’s unexpected maturity softened his heart.
Jiang Sui smiled gently. “Thank you, Uncle Shen. Thank you as well for taking such good care of my mother all these years.”
Shen Xiangdong, suddenly flattered, grew a little embarrassed. “It’s nothing, really. My pleasure.”
To be honest, Jiang Sui was beautiful. Today she looked every bit the sweet, charming girl—her smile could melt anyone’s heart. And who wouldn’t like being praised by such a lovely daughter? He’d always wished for a daughter, but fate had only given him sons.
Jiang Sui, her eyes still rimmed with red, turned to Shen Qian and Shen Li. “Brother Shen Qian, Brother Shen Li, I was thoughtless before and caused you both trouble.”
The two young men were both shaken by her sweet address.
Jiang Sui set the small shopping bags she was holding on the coffee table and took out two gift boxes. “These are gifts I picked out for you. This one is for Brother Shen Qian. I know you often sign documents at the company, so I especially chose a fountain pen for you. I even had your name engraved on it~.”
She presented the gift like a treasure, placing it in Shen Qian’s hands.
He was momentarily stunned, then accepted it almost on reflex, gazing at the graphite-colored fountain pen in the box in a daze.
How had she known he loved signing with fountain pens? Not only that, he was a devoted enthusiast of hard-tip calligraphy.
The pen wasn’t extravagantly expensive, but neither was it cheap. It matched his tastes perfectly.
“This is for Brother Shen Li.” Jiang Sui produced another gift box.
Shen Li eyed the box with a mixture of curiosity and reserve, finally feigning indifference as he accepted it.
But the instant he opened it, his eyes lit up.
A custom mechanical keyboard!?
Jiang Sui beamed. “Brother Shen Li, I know you love gaming, so I had these keyboard components custom-ordered and assembled it myself. I hope you like it.”
Suppressing his delight, Shen Li responded awkwardly, “Thanks.”
Truth be told, with Shen Li’s status and resources, he lacked for nothing. He could have any peripherals he wanted, and his house was already full of custom and self-assembled gear.
But no one had ever personally assembled a keyboard just for him. It was clear how much thought had gone into this gift—he could name the manufacturer of every component, all of them top of the line.
Combined with the sweet “Brother” she’d called him, whatever prejudice Shen Li had once held against Jiang Sui had now all but disappeared.
