Chapter 33: It Seems Like They're Eager for Me to Leave
He was a man, yet his eyelashes were even thicker and darker than a woman's. But there was nothing effeminate about him; paired with those deep, fathomless eyes, it was just right. Yes, utterly captivating. Irresistibly so.
She averted her gaze, trying to compose herself. "Mr. Lu, if you wish to help, I won’t refuse." Although the agreement clearly stated that their work and personal lives were to remain separate, this matter involved Lu Xuanxuan, after all, so there was no real reason for her to refuse.
To be honest, her feelings toward Lu Ye were conflicting now. On one hand, she wanted nothing to do with him. On the other, perhaps out of spite, the sight of his face made her want to extract some benefit from him. After all, why should she suffer alone if he was still bound to become her enemy in this life? She might as well take what she could from him, or perhaps... engineer some kind of "accident" to end him. Then, as his wife, inheriting his estate wouldn’t be out of the question.
Lu Ye, watching her eat distractedly after she spoke, found the corners of his lips curling unconsciously. As he took his first bite, a strange realization dawned on him: for the first time in years, he felt something like... the warmth of home.
Home? His expression shifted almost imperceptibly, something unnameable flickering in his eyes—a feeling even he didn’t quite understand.
Jiang Sui had assumed that after dinner that night, Lu Ye would leave. Yet, he didn’t. The next morning, when she got up, he was still there—and had even changed clothes! Yesterday he’d worn a gray suit; today, a more casual brown knit sweater that made him look—damn, even more handsome!
Why did she find this version of Lu Ye even more attractive than the dog emperor of her previous life, or any other man she’d seen with this same face? It was strange—after all, it was the same face.
Lu Ye sat in the living room, reading documents on his tablet, occasionally signing electronic files with a stylus. A cup of coffee steamed on the table; he took a sip from time to time.
"You seem rather eager for me to leave." His voice sounded quietly through the living room.
Jiang Sui glanced around. Was he talking to her? But there was no one else in the living room. Leaning over the railing on the second floor, still in her champagne-colored silk nightdress, she asked, "How long do you plan to stay here? Until the divorce waiting period ends?"
Lu Ye paused momentarily in his signing, answering simply, "I’ll be staying here for the next few days."
"Don’t you have work?" Jiang Sui was curious. "Doesn’t your job need you?"
"You said you wanted a divorce because I’m rarely home. I told you, everything else is negotiable."
Jiang Sui fell silent.
So Lu Ye was actually trying to win her back?
"Is this really necessary?" she asked in confusion. "You could just find a woman you like, get married, and let her take care of Xuanxuan."
Lu Ye hesitated, then said quietly, "There is no woman I like."
"Then do you like men?"
He said nothing.
"That’s not unheard of," she went on. "Men can be nurturing too, you know. There are plenty of—"
Noticing Lu Ye’s face growing colder by the second, Jiang Sui quickly shut her mouth. No point bantering with him. Let him do as he pleases; if she couldn’t figure this man out, she wouldn’t bother trying.
She still had her own things to attend to.
When Jiang Sui returned to her room to change, Lu Ye’s brow furrowed slightly. In truth, he didn’t know what he was thinking either. Last night, he’d simply wanted to stay here; the thought emerged, and he immediately had his secretary send over a change of clothes.
He couldn’t fathom why Jiang Sui now was so different from the Jiang Sui of before. But this Jiang Sui, at least, he didn’t dislike.
