Chapter 22: Brother, the Great Qing Has Fallen
Hearing these words, Jiang Sui suddenly found herself at a loss for a response.
“It’s only right. No matter what, Xuanxuan calls me ‘Mommy’,” she replied.
There was a brief silence on the other end, then a voice said, “Do you need my help?”
Jiang Sui guessed that Lu Ye was referring to the matter concerning Bai Xixue.
“Not for now. If I need anything, I’ll reach out to you,” she answered, leaving the door open—after all, she might really need Lu Ye’s help someday.
Lu Ye acknowledged with a simple “mm,” then hung up.
He looked at the live broadcast, which had reconnected. On screen, Jiang Sui had just finished her call. She stood in place for a moment, lost in thought, before heading into the room to check on the sleeping Lu Xuanxuan.
Lu Ye frowned slightly.
Perhaps, he thought, he had misunderstood Jiang Sui in the past.
His secretary entered from the doorway, ready to report on work, only to find the big boss watching a live stream. The secretary’s eyes widened in surprise, doubting for a moment whether he’d entered the wrong room.
But he was a consummate professional and immediately lowered his head, acting as if he hadn’t seen anything.
After all, watching live streams wasn’t exactly a dignified pastime for the boss—it certainly didn’t fit with his usual aloof persona.
Could it be that the boss enjoyed watching young ladies dance on Douyin?
So the boss was just like any ordinary person…
Lu Ye pressed the tablet facedown. “There’s a popular live-streaming variety show right now.”
“What show?” The secretary didn’t quite follow.
“It’s called ‘Mom Is a Hero.’ Find a PR company to monitor public opinion about it,” Lu Ye instructed casually.
“Understood.” Unable to resist, Xie Yuan asked, “Why are you suddenly interested in variety shows?”
“My niece and Jiang Sui are participating,” he replied coolly.
Xie Yuan understood now—it was because the boss’s niece was involved.
No wonder the boss was concerned.
As Lu Ye’s secretary, he was well aware of the situation between Lu Ye and Jiang Sui. The boss’s wife, whose marriage was kept secret, had always been a shadowy presence. Lu Ye rarely mentioned her, and divorce was already on the horizon.
He had to admit, this woman was audacious—how dare she take Lu Xuanxuan to participate in a live-streaming variety show without permission? It was as if she’d stomped on the boss’s head.
“Don’t worry, I’ll take care of it right away.”
Because a sudden downpour had halted all outdoor broadcasts, only the cameras inside each room remained live.
During the intermission, the director and production team approached Jiang Sui multiple times, hoping she would apologize to Bai Xixue and reconcile on camera.
Jiang Sui rejected them outright. “An apology is out of the question—unless she comes and apologizes to my Xuanxuan.”
When the director’s team summoned Jiang Sui to a place without cameras yet again, they received a phone call.
“Oh, yes, yes,” the director nodded and bowed, immediately handing the phone to Jiang Sui.
“Jiang Sui, someone wants to speak with you. Please take the call.”
Jiang Sui accepted the phone.
Caught off guard, the production team watched as she switched to speakerphone.
“Ms. Jiang, hello. My surname is Xu, you may call me Mr. Xu. I request that you immediately apologize to Ms. Bai Xixue in a live broadcast and publish an apology article on your social media. Otherwise, you will be suspended from recording, and all live broadcast resources will be revoked. Your subsequent opportunities will also be cut off.
I trust you understand what I mean. Since Ms. Jiang wishes to thrive in this industry, you should know what’s expected.”
Jiang Sui sneered. “You must be one of Ji Chuan’s father’s people, right? Brother, the Qing Dynasty has long fallen, yet you’re still trying to force a confession? If I recall correctly, the entertainment industry isn’t owned by the Ji family, is it? Want to cover the sky with one hand, playing at being some crime boss? This is the twenty-second century—should I teach you how to write the words ‘crack down on organized crime’?”
