Chapter 21: Thank You for Protecting Xuanxuan
After all, keeping this woman around was a risk. It would be better to deal with her sooner rather than later. Back when she was Jiang Sui’s agent, she’d pocketed plenty of kickbacks, only found her the worst jobs, and even took money to arrange a few shady set-ups for QGZ. Fortunately, Jiang Sui came from a wealthy family and knew how to handle such things, so she managed to get through it all. That incident had at least led to a change of agent—removing a ticking time bomb from her life.
“Did you two argue because of me?” Lu Xuanxuan asked in a small voice. She was young, but that didn’t mean she understood nothing.
Jiang Sui looked at her and soothed, “It wasn’t because of you. It has nothing to do with you.”
Lu Xuanxuan pursed her lips, her little brows furrowed tightly. “Jiang Sui Mommy, I won’t argue with you anymore. I know you only argued with them because of me. From now on, I won’t run off or get myself hurt again.”
She was already six years old, and she understood that Jiang Sui Mommy’s conflict with the others was all because of her. Jiang Sui Mommy had been very angry because she got hurt. In fact, Jiang Sui Mommy was good to her.
Jiang Sui’s brows arched slightly. Lu Xuanxuan wasn’t actually a difficult child; she’d just become sensitive after losing her parents. That was why she’d been hostile toward Jiang Sui, afraid that her new presence would take away her loved ones. Besides, Lu Ye had hardly disciplined her, indulging her every whim. That was how Lu Xuanxuan had grown so willful.
She had always seen Jiang Sui as the bad woman, someone who wouldn’t treat her well. Now her understanding was changing. Her naturally sensitive nature allowed her to sense Jiang Sui’s kindness, and the hostility faded.
Jiang Sui ruffled Xuanxuan’s hair. “I’m glad you understand. From now on, if Ji Chuan and the others call you to go with them, you can’t go. You can play with Brother Xiao Nan and the others, but don’t play with Ji Chuan anymore, all right?”
Lu Xuanxuan nodded obediently. “Actually, I used to really like playing with Brother Ji Chuan. But lately I found out he’s both clumsy and has a bad temper. His mother is lazy and greedy. He’s not nice at all, and he said I fell down on my own. But I asked him to help me up, and he didn’t, so I got hurt. So I won’t bother with him anymore!”
Jiang Sui nodded. “Good. Don’t play with them anymore.”
When Lu Xuanxuan grew tired and went to rest, Lu Ye called.
The first thing he asked was, “Is Xuanxuan all right?”
“It’s just a scratch, nothing serious.” Jiang Sui felt a bit embarrassed herself. She’d just promised to keep Xuanxuan safe, and now something had happened. Lu Ye was probably going to dislike her even more.
“That’s good,” Lu Ye replied in a deep voice. “I’ve sent a medical team over. They’ll be there in an hour.”
Jiang Sui was silent for a moment. She cleared her throat. “I told you, it’s just a scratch. She’ll be fine in a couple of days. Isn’t this a bit much?”
“Doesn’t Bai Xixue have an on-set doctor?” His tone was icy.
Jiang Sui understood then—he must have just had a confrontation with the man behind Bai Xixue.
“Do as you like,” Jiang Sui replied helplessly. Still, she was a little curious. Who exactly was Lu Ye? Sending a medical team was no small matter.
The original script had been vague about Lu Ye’s background, only mentioning that he was wealthy. Nothing else about him was ever explained.
“I saw what you did to Bai Xixue,” Lu Ye’s cold, indifferent voice came again.
Jiang Sui was about to say she’d handle it herself and wouldn’t drag him into it, when he said, “Thank you for standing up for Xuanxuan.”
Jiang Sui was taken aback.
“Whether you were putting on a show or meant it sincerely, you protected her, and that’s enough.” There was a touch more warmth to Lu Ye’s voice than before.
