Chapter 50 Su Zhentian's Remorse
Su Yunching followed closely behind him and soon arrived at the courtyard where she had once lived with her parents. Although it had been uninhabited for years, it was kept immaculately clean.
This showed that Su Zhentian still held some affection for his son, otherwise he would not have treated her with such indifference.
After all, ever since she was old enough to understand things, she had heard countless times that Su Zhentian despised her because of her father. Coupled with the fact that she was a good-for-nothing unable to cultivate, her mere existence only brought shame to the Su family, causing him to detest her all the more.
In the past, she would still hold onto a sliver of hope, thinking that once his anger subsided, he might smile and stroke her head as he used to, speaking to her gently.
Yet until the moment of her death, that day never came. Having lived through a second life, she had long seen through all of this; naturally, she no longer held any expectations.
Ironically, at this very moment, Su Zhentian, who was leading the way, sighed as he looked at the courtyard. "You've suffered all these years, grievance has been done to you."
"It was my fault before for projecting all my blame onto you and detesting you, which made your life in the family so difficult," he murmured, perhaps moved by the familiar scenery.
Hearing this now, however, left her entirely unmoved. These words fell far short of the horrifying and deeply etched torment she had suffered before her death.
Therefore, she looked at him coldly, and a moment later, a faint smile curved her lips. "That doesn't matter anymore."
Su Zhentian was momentarily stunned, and she continued, "To an irrelevant stranger, naturally there is no such thing as grievance."
In her eyes, they were no longer worthy of her grievance or her pain, because they simply did not deserve it.
"An irrelevant stranger?" He could not describe the taste in his heart at that moment. Was it guilt? Or perhaps a sense of loss? Whatever it was, his heart felt heavy.
Ignoring him further, Su Yunching lifted her feet and walked deeper inside. Su Zhentian shook his head helplessly and followed after her.
When he retrieved the Cyan Water Chestnut, he handed it to her. "Child, take it."
Su Yunching took the Cyan Water Chestnut and examined it closely to ensure they had not tried to fool her. It was identical to the one in her memories. She then said, "I wish to stay a little longer in my father's courtyard. If there is nothing else, you may leave first."
Su Zhentian had originally wanted to say more, but after a moment of reflection, he finally closed his mouth.
Because he indeed owed her, and there was nothing left to argue about. He could only look at her and leave behind a single sentence: "The Su family truly treated you poorly before. If you choose to return, the family will heavily pour resources into you. Any reasonable request you make will certainly be considered by the family."
He said this partly out of guilt, and partly because he did not want to let such a rare talent slip away, hoping to mend their relationship as much as possible.
He also regretted taking out his resentment on her in the past. She was innocent, and none of those matters could be blamed on her.
Nor should he have neglected her just because she was a good-for-nothing, deeming her a disgrace. Now he was filled with profound remorse. Who could have known her talents were so formidable that she could even defeat Xiao Jinghuai, the genius everyone praised?
Yet to Su Yunching, his words sounded supremely ironic. In her past life, it was his neglect and indulgence that had driven her to a tragic death.
Though her death was not directly caused by him, he had acted as an accomplice through his inaction. She might not hate him with the same venom she harbored for Su Yunyue and the others, but she could never forgive him, nor did she ever want to.
She lifted her chin and looked at the old man before her, a smile devoid of warmth playing on her lips. "I believe I have made myself very clear. I have not the slightest desire to return to the Su family, nor do I wish to have any further association with it."
"Clan Head Su, could you please step outside? I wish to spend a little more time in my parents' courtyard. Rest assured, I won't take too long." Her distant attitude instantly extinguished the lingering hopes in Su Zhentian's heart.
"Very well," he finally nodded and said. After he departed, Su Yunching did not wander around; instead, she headed straight for a specific destination.
That was her father's study. Walking into the room, she made her way directly to the bookshelf, pushed aside a stack of books to find a hidden compartment, and opened it. Lying inside was a small white porcelain vial.
A flash of cold light crossed her eyes when she saw the vial. She had not forgotten how, in her past life, Su Yunqi had forced this very poison down her throat, making her writhe in agonizing pain while gloating that the poison had been left behind by her father.
Since Su Yunqi had harmed her so viciously in the past life, she would strike back with the exact same method this time.
She had experienced this poison—it was overwhelmingly potent and agonizingly cruel. She would make Su Yunqi taste that torment thoroughly. Rather than waiting for the other to use poison on her, she preferred to strike first.
She carefully tucked away the vial of poison and turned to leave. As she stepped outside, she happened to see Su Zhentian standing right outside the door.
"Let me walk you out," he said, taking two steps forward as he looked at her.
"No need, I wouldn't dare trouble Clan Head Su. I can find my own way out. Just... do not ever come looking for me again in the future." She truly wished to have no further ties with them whatsoever.
Without waiting for Su Zhentian to reply, she walked away directly. The moment she stepped out of the Su family gates, she felt a profound sense of relief, knowing that the bonds linking her to them had been thoroughly severed.
She had retrieved the Cyan Water Chestnut, and now she only needed to send those who deserved death to their graves.
As she stepped out into the street, her appearance naturally drew the attention of many onlookers, but she paid them no mind and walked straight ahead.
She traversed the bustling market streets and arrived at a deserted, narrow alleyway. At the far end of the alley stood an abandoned residential estate slated for demolition soon, which was why the area was so sparsely populated.
Right then, she halted her steps and said coldly, "Su Yunqi, you've been tailing me the entire way. Come out."
"You noticed I was following you all along, and yet you still dared to lead me here?" A figure stepped out from around the corner.
"I anticipated you would come, so I deliberately searched for a secluded spot," she replied unhurriedly, not a shred of fear in her eyes.
"Su Yunching, do you think you're invincible now? Even after discovering I was following you, you aren't afraid of losing? Are you perhaps far too full of yourself?" Su Yunqi gritted her teeth as she glared at her, her eyes burning with jealousy and resentment.
She found Su Yunching's arrogance unbearable, as if defeating Xiao Jinghuai made her some supreme being acting with such an overbearing attitude.
She loathed this side of Su Yunching, which made her look weak by comparison.
"Afraid? How could that be? I'm actually looking forward to this!" She had deliberately lured Su Yunqi here because she knew the latter would never accept the Cyan Water Chestnut falling into her hands and would do whatever it took to snatch it back.
After all, Su Yunqi had always been this way: whatever caught her eye could never be allowed to belong to someone else, and even if it did, she would resort to any means necessary to rob it away.
