Chapter 35: You Really Are Selfish

Everyone was looking forward to seeing the two of them clash. They had assumed it would be a harmonious match, but no one had expected it to be so fierce.
Both of them struck ruthlessly, as though terrified of losing. Su Yunqi in particular never stopped attacking, launching one assault after another without pause.
The sight left everyone looking uneasy. Some even remarked, “Are they really engaged? Anyone who didn’t know better would think they were sworn enemies!”
“This match determines who gets the chance to enter a major sect, so there can be no mistakes. Naturally, neither of them dares to be careless!”
“Exactly. In a match like this, forget being engaged—even a married couple would have to stand aside. This concerns their entire future!”
“That’s right. If I were up there fighting, I’d probably be even more ruthless than they are!”
“But surely they have feelings for each other. Can they really bring themselves to go that far?”
“Exactly. She is his fiancée, after all. Even if he wanted to win, there was no need for him to be so merciless, was there?”
“Enough. What makes you think you have the right to pass judgment on them?”
Among the crowd, some chose to support them, while others found their behavior incomprehensible and unacceptable. None of it affected the two people still battling in the arena.
Su Yunqing watched coldly. Seeing the two of them fight without the slightest restraint, she thought of Xiao Jinghuai’s hypocritical face—how he had warned her not to bully Su Yunqi during the competition, yet now he himself showed no mercy and made no effort to hold back.
How laughable. Whenever something did not affect him personally, he always acted so lofty and self-righteous.
This match lasted far longer than the previous ones. It continued for nearly two hours before finally ending.
The winner was naturally Xiao Jinghuai. He staggered down from the platform, clearly suffering serious injuries.
His expression was grim as well. He had never expected Su Yunqi’s cultivation to have broken through during the past six months, bringing her to the same level as him. Had she not only recently reached that realm, he might not have been able to win at all.
Even walking tugged painfully at his wounds. Who knew whether his injuries would affect his later matches?

For that reason, he felt somewhat resentful toward Su Yunqi, believing that she should not have struck so heavily and caused him such serious injuries.
Just then, he saw Su Yunqing walking toward him. His swaying body immediately straightened, and an arrogant smile appeared on his face.
She must have been overwhelmed by his performance and come over because she was even more infatuated with him now.
Crossing his arms, he put on a disdainful expression. “What? Regretting it now?”
“Regretting it? Are you out of your mind? I only came over to watch the joke.” She looked him over with undisguised distaste, the revulsion in her eyes becoming increasingly apparent.
“How dare you insult me? You even dare mock me? Are you tired of living?” Her humiliation of him instantly darkened his expression, and his gaze turned menacing.
“First, I was merely stating a fact. Second, you told me not to bully Su Yunqi during the competition, yet when it came to you, that rule no longer applied? I never realized you had two faces!”
“Or is it that, so long as your own interests are not involved, you can always stand above everyone else and condemn them? But the moment your interests are at stake, all the things you said before—and all those rules—can simply be ignored?”
“If that is the case, then you really are selfish. Yet you insist on presenting yourself as selfless. You clearly love yourself more than anyone else, but you pretend that you cannot live without her. I doubt there is anyone more hypocritical than you.”
With every sentence she spoke, Xiao Jinghuai’s expression grew darker. She was rubbing his dignity into the ground, and it made him feel deeply uncomfortable.
“Did you come here just to criticize me?” Xiao Jinghuai endured and endured before finally suppressing his anger.
“You are overthinking it. I merely happened to pass by.” She glanced toward the place where she had been standing earlier. A crowd had gathered there, chattering noisily, forcing her to find somewhere quieter from which to watch.
Xiao Jinghuai naturally noticed what she was doing, as well as the people gathered not far away. His brows immediately knitted together.
He had never expected Su Yunqing to be so popular now. No wonder her attitude was so arrogant and she dared to speak to him that way. So these people were the source of her confidence.
“What I said before still stands. But I have never been a patient man. If you provoke me like this again, or continue putting on airs and making me wait, there will be no next time.” He spoke condescendingly, his tone filled with the arrogance of someone granting a favor.
His words did not make Su Yunqing feel the slightest regret. On the contrary, they only confirmed that his narcissism had reached an indescribable level.
She rolled her eyes at him and, unwilling to waste another word, turned and left.
Xiao Jinghuai did not continue pestering her. He needed to have his injuries treated at once, lest they affect his later matches.

Everyone from the Su family wore an unpleasant expression. They had placed their hopes in Su Yunqi, never expecting her to encounter Xiao Jinghuai and lose the match. Su Yun Yue had already been defeated by Su Yunqing, leaving Su Yunqing as the only member of the Su family still in the competition.
The Su family elders all looked grim. One of them glanced at Su Zhentian and said, “Patriarch, Su Yunqing is the only one who has not yet been eliminated. If she truly manages to secure a place in a major sect this time, we must find a way to repair our relationship with her as soon as possible.”
Su Yunqi, who had originally been the most likely to enter a major sect, had been eliminated by Xiao Jinghuai. Now, Su Yunqing was the only person the Su family could rely on.
Su Zhentian’s expression darkened, and his hand clenched tightly. “Do you think I don’t want to? That girl is far too arrogant and does not respect me in the slightest. She even declared that she wanted to sever ties with the Su family. Do you really think she will change her mind?”
The more he spoke, the angrier he became. Recalling her words, he could not help thinking that she was an ignorant, reckless child who knew nothing of her own limitations.
“She is probably angry because the Su family ignored her for so many years. Since we are trying to repair our relationship with her now, it is only natural that she bears some resentment. Why not wait until the competition ends, invite her home, and speak openly with her? If we dispel the bitterness in her heart, there may still be room to mend things.”
“That’s right. From now on, her position in the Su family can be the same as Yunqi’s, and the clan’s resources will be poured into her as much as possible. I doubt she would refuse. As for her marriage, we can choose another suitable match for her as compensation.”
They continued talking among themselves, convinced that Su Yunqing had no reason to refuse.
Su Zhentian, however, merely sat there with a cold expression. In his view, that girl would certainly never return. Ever since the engagement had been dissolved, her attitude had changed completely. She no longer called him Grandfather, but Patriarch instead. It seemed she had intended to draw a clear line between them from that moment onward.
At the thought, his expression turned even colder. “Whether that girl returns to the Su family is up to her! The Su family is not dependent on a single person. Even without her, we will carry on just fine!”
