Volume One, Chapter 11: Don’t You Dare Bully My Sister

Lu Chengze’s gaze was sharp as he stared intently at Ruyan gripping Zhao Wanzhou’s hand tightly. Ruyan quickly released Zhao Wanzhou and looked toward Lu Chengze.
“Let Ru Yan go!”
Lu Chengze strode over slowly, bent down, and kissed her forehead.
“What’s there to fear? She’s your person; I wouldn’t do anything to her.”
Ruyan felt a wave of disgust and wiped her mouth fiercely.
Lu Chengze’s face turned pale as he scowled coldly at Zhao Wanzhou. “Doctor Zhao, what are you still doing here? Trying to watch the intimacy between me and my wife?”
Zhao Wanzhou glanced at Ruyan with concern, pressed his lips, and said, “I’ll leave first.”
After he left, Lu Chengze said viciously, “Even when you’re sick, you’re not obedient—you’re still seducing men? And a lowly doctor at that? You really are desperate.”
Ruyan’s head throbbed from his harsh words.
“Don’t talk nonsense. Zhao Langzhong and I are completely innocent. On the contrary, what about you? Why did you suddenly kiss me and treat me like a substitute for your sister?”
“You’re not worthy of being her substitute.”
“Fine, then I’ll just think of it as a bite from a pig.”
Her disgusted look provoked him. He grabbed her chin, deliberately trying to make her feel sick.
Ruyan just found him revolting and couldn’t help but feel nauseous.
Lu Chengze didn’t expect such a strong reaction from her and was furious deep down.
“You can’t handle this? Once you’re better, I’ll make sure you carry the Lu family’s heir.”
That sentence was nothing short of an insult.
She raised her hand and slapped him hard, but her strength was too weak, and he easily restrained her.
“How dare you hit me? Don’t you want your little maid’s life?”
“What did you do to her?”
“Don’t worry, she’s not dead yet. But she’s not far from it either.”
Ruyan said, “Let her go! If you want to do something to me, do it directly. Why make a servant suffer?”
“I didn’t want to trouble her, but the more you resist, the more I want to torment her. Come, I’ll show you what she’s become because of you.”
Lu Chengze lifted her up and headed toward the woodshed.
Before entering, Ruyan smelled a foul stench—a mixture of swill and garbage.
Ru Yan lay on the ground, covered in blood. She reached out to touch the spilled swill and forced herself to swallow it.
“I can’t die. The young madam needs me…”
No matter how foul it was, she forced it down. The young madam had treated her like a sister since childhood; only she saw her as human. Now, she was all Ru Yan had.

Seeing this, Ruyan’s mind went blank with a loud bang. She choked out, “Ru Yan.”
Ru Yan’s eyes rolled; she had been beaten so severely there wasn’t a spot on her body left unbruised, blood oozing from wounds.
Seeing Ruyan, tears streamed down her face, beads of sweat pouring out.
Her heart ached with bitterness—she understood she had become a burden to Ruyan.
Ruyan couldn’t bear seeing Ru Yan like this. She knew clearly that if she continued to defy Lu Chengze, Ru Yan would truly die.
She broke down and pleaded:
“Let her go, I beg you. I’ll agree to anything you want.”
Lu Chengze snorted coldly, wiping her tears. For some reason, just looking at that servant girl annoyed him. Could she really care so much for a maid?
But Ruyan’s eyes held nothing but disdain for him.
“I told you to behave, and none of this would have happened. When you’re better, apologize to the old madam. I might be merciful enough to have the doctor treat this little maid.”
Ruyan simply responded with a soft “hmm” and didn’t want to say more.
Lu Chengze carried her back to the room.
Her injuries were severe; it took her two weeks of rest before she was well enough to get out of bed and walk. Lu Chengze then forced her to kneel before the ancestral hall and apologize to Old Madam Lu.
She knelt in the Lu family ancestral hall, humiliation filling her eyes. Her lips were pale as she whispered:
“Old Madam, it was my fault.”
Old Madam Lu glanced at her coldly. “Enough. I’ll let you off this time. Next time, it won’t be so easy.”
Hatred flickered in Ruyan’s eyes. She thought to herself, there would be no next time.
She would soon divorce Lu Chengze.
After leaving the ancestral hall, she took the initiative to say to Lu Chengze, “I’ve been sick for half a month, and you haven’t seen Yingying in a long time either. How about tonight?”
Lu Chengze’s first reaction was anger. “Are you so eager to push me to another woman?”
Ruyan found his reaction inexplicable. “Don’t you hate me?”
Lu Chengze couldn’t explain himself. He was irritated, probably because he hadn’t seen Yingying for too long, causing him to misread the situation.
It was all Ruyan’s fault—if she hadn’t been injured, he wouldn’t have such chaotic thoughts.
“You’re right. You can’t compare to Yingying at all.”
He even tried to read any sign of dissatisfaction on Ruyan’s face, but she remained expressionless.
“You and she are truly a perfect match.”
She added this sentence, which only made Lu Chengze more displeased. He suppressed his annoyance, reached into his sleeve, and took out a packet of candied fruit, offering it to her.
“Take some after your medicine. Didn’t you like these when you were little?”

He had specially bought it that morning.
Ruyan deliberately loosened her grip as she took it and said coldly, “Don’t buy these anymore. I feel sick whenever I eat gifts from you.”
Lu Chengze stared at the spilled candied fruit on the floor, his face stiffened, and his eyes darkened with fury.
“Do you know what happens when you anger me?”
Ruyan felt a little afraid and stepped back. Lu Chengze picked up the candied fruit from the ground, then grabbed the back of her neck and forced the sweets into her mouth.
“I spoke nicely, but you wouldn’t listen. You want to make me angry. Tell me, aren’t you shameless?”
Ruyan’s mouth was stuffed full of candied fruit. She patted his shoulder, struggling to break free, but it was useless. Her cheeks puffed out, and she looked utterly miserable.
“Help…”
She managed to utter from her throat.
Lu Chengze was going mad, feeling even more satisfied seeing her like this. Just then, a sharp pain struck his head, and blood began to trickle down from his scalp.
It was Ruan Haonan holding a trembling piece of firewood.
“Don’t bully my sister!”
Only then did Lu Chengze come to his senses and released Ruyan. She covered her mouth, retching, realizing he had bullied her again.
He felt both frustrated and thought Ruyan deserved it.
She shouldn’t trample on his goodwill!
Holding his head, Lu Chengze approached Ruan Haonan. Ruyan feared he might hurt him and quickly got up to hold Lu Chengze.
“You mustn’t hurt my little brother!”
Lu Chengze softened a little at her embrace. Her body was soft, and she carried a faint, intoxicating scent unique to her.
It had been so long since she’d come to him willingly. He couldn’t help but soften his voice.
“I won’t hurt him. Haonan, you misunderstood. I was just teasing your sister earlier.”
Seeing that he truly meant no harm, Ruyan released him. She ran over, pulled Ruan Haonan behind her, took the firewood from his hand, and threw it away.
“Haonan, don’t be afraid. Sister’s here.”
Lu Chengze noticed how wary she was of him but how differently she treated Ruan Haonan. A surge of anger welled up inside him.
After all, Haonan was a man—how could she be so intimate with him?
