Volume One, Chapter 30: I Just Want You to Take Responsibility for Me
“Come on, Sister-in-law. Some jokes really shouldn’t be made.”
Li Haowen swallowed hard.
Wu Jiabei wiped away her tears. “Weren’t you the one who told me to look ahead? When I raised my head, I saw you. What’s wrong? You’re not willing?”
The corner of Li Haowen’s mouth twitched violently.
Wu Jiabei knew that no matter how open-minded Li Haowen might be, suddenly asking him to date his late brother’s former girlfriend would still challenge the very limits of his values. So she gave a soft laugh and changed her wording.
“All right, I’m not teasing you anymore. Actually, I have the same doubts as you. I’ve also suspected for some time that Li Wenhan’s fatal car accident may not have been a simple accident. I think the two of us can work together.”
“After all, two people are stronger than one, aren’t they?”
Investigate that car accident?
Only then did Li Haowen hesitate before nodding.
“Do you have a lot of information, Sister-in-law?”
At that, Wu Jiabei nodded. “Naturally. How about coming to my place tonight to take a look?”
“Oh, no—I mean, how about coming to my place another day?”
It was, after all, Li Wenhan’s death anniversary. Shamelessly seducing his younger brother like this was indeed somewhat inappropriate.
Yet if she regarded herself as Li Haowen’s sister-in-law, even Wu Jiabei found the idea absurd.
After all, Li Wenhan had only agreed to accept her feelings that very morning.
By the afternoon, he was gone…
She had never enjoyed the tenderness of a boyfriend, nor experienced the moment of becoming a woman. In Wu Jiabei’s world, the name Li Wenhan had vanished completely.
For years, she had even wondered whether the relationship between herself and Li Wenhan could truly be considered a romance.
Beside them, Fang Mo’s entire worldview had been shattered. He glanced at Li Haowen’s strange expression.
“Look, your romantic encounter has arrived.”
“Ahem. We’re still standing at my brother’s grave. Don’t do this.”
…
About half an hour later, Ning Yuelan walked over.
He Xiwan had not come out to see her guests off, but judging from the triumphant smile on Ning Yuelan’s face, something good had clearly happened.
“Little fellow, you did your big sister a huge favor. Tell me, what reward do you want? How about I give myself to you?”
Wearing Valentino high heels that tapped smartly against the ground, Ning Yuelan walked toward Fang Mo.
She immediately hooked her arm around his. Her softness brushed against Fang Mo’s cheek, turning his face bright red, but the woman acted as though she felt nothing and even gave his arm a playful shake.
Pfft—
Fang Mo’s old face flushed. Why was Sister Yuelan becoming more and more uninhibited?
She used to tease him only at home, but now she was openly putting on a show in public. How embarrassing would it be if someone saw them?
Sure enough, he glanced toward the three women and Li Haowen.
They were all looking at the couple with disdain, seemingly only one step away from raising their middle fingers.
“Yuelan, could you pay a little attention to where we are? We’re still here. Can’t you two go home and be affectionate there?”
Wu Jiabei rolled her eyes.
Ning Yuelan paused, then nodded lightly.
“Good idea. Fang Mo, come on. Let’s go home.”
With that, Ning Yuelan pulled Fang Mo along and prepared to leave. But how could Fang Mo let Sister Yuelan drag him away like that? Wouldn’t that amount to publicly confirming that they were off to do something improper?
He might not care about his own dignity, but Sister Yuelan had to care about hers!
Fang Mo gave a helpless smile. “Stop fooling around, big sister.”
“Hmph.”
“As the saying goes, beauty is a feast for the eyes. When other men see me, they can hardly wait to carry me home and have their way with me. Yet whenever you see me, you look as though I were a tiger. Could it be…”
A sly gleam flickered in Ning Yuelan’s beautiful eyes.
“You don’t like me?”
If I hadn’t liked you, I would have been more decisive than anyone when you asked for a divorce.
Fang Mo’s face reddened as he mumbled, “I do.”
“Louder.”

Ning Yuelan chuckled, pretending she had not heard him.
Fang Mo’s cheeks flushed even deeper, and he was just about to speak when Wu Jiabei finally lost her patience.
“That’s enough, enough! The two of you, disappear already. You’re driving me crazy. There should at least be a limit to how much affection you flaunt in public, shouldn’t there? I’m grieving here, and you, Ning Yuelan—are you even human? Aren’t you just rubbing salt into my wounds?”
Only then did Fang Mo come to his senses and notice something strange.
Did Li Haowen’s sister-in-law know Sister Yuelan too?
Ning Yuelan’s sudden teasing had caught him off guard, and he had not thought much of it. Now, however, he realized that something was wrong.
“Miss Wu, are you and Sister Yuelan friends?”
The way she spoke was remarkably similar to the way he usually interacted with Li Haowen.
“Damn, you really don’t know me? Didn’t Ning Yuelan ever tell you about her girlfriends? I’m going to be one of the bridesmaids at your wedding in a few days.”
Wu Jiabei widened her eyes and looked toward Ning Yuelan.
At that, Ning Yuelan immediately returned to her usual cool and aloof expression.
“No, she didn’t.”
“My husband and I are newlyweds, and we have endless sweet nothings to whisper to each other. Why would I waste time telling him about you?”
“You…”
Wu Jiabei glared at her furiously, but Song Yu soothed her from the side.
“It’s fine, it’s fine. You know what she’s like. Her tongue is sharp, and she loves being irritating. Let’s find somewhere to eat. If we keep this up, my low blood sugar is going to act up.”
With that, Song Yu signaled to Zheng Ronghe, indicating that she should go get the car.
Zheng Ronghe hurried toward the cemetery exit.
The three women had driven one car there, while Li Haowen had driven another, and Ning Yuelan had driven one as well.
Under different circumstances, they could all have taken a single car down for the meal and returned later to retrieve the others.
But this was a cemetery!
Who in their right mind would leave a car parked in a place like this for ten days or more?
Fang Mo got into Ning Yuelan’s car. Li Haowen was pulled into Wu Jiabei’s, while Song Yu and Zheng Ronghe drove away in his own vehicle.
“Little fellow, now you can properly tell your big sister how you became the savior of the eldest daughter of the He family—and, while you were at it, stole Miss He’s heart.”
Ning Yuelan kept both hands steady on the steering wheel as she drove down from the cemetery.
At that, Fang Mo coughed awkwardly. “Sister Yuelan, don’t say things like that. Miss He probably only has a favorable impression of me.”
Ning Yuelan glanced at him from the corner of her eye.
Actually, even if it was only a favorable impression…
Big sister still doesn’t want anyone else to have one toward you!
Because I began falling for you precisely because I had a favorable impression of you at first. Before I knew it, I had fallen hopelessly in love with you.
“Ahem. It happened a few days ago, when I went to the underground garage to get the car after helping you alter your wedding dress at the Ning family’s shopping mall. I happened to see Miss He’s grandfather collapse. I acted on impulse and didn’t think too much about it. Besides, Miss He said there was no signal in the underground garage.”
“So I helped carry the old man into the mall.”
Fang Mo shrugged.
“When I saw that he was showing signs of mechanical asphyxia, I performed the Heimlich maneuver. Then the ambulance arrived. The two of us probably didn’t say more than four sentences to each other in total.”
Hearing that, Ning Yuelan curled her red lips.
“Our little brother really is charming. He managed to conquer the capital’s dream girl for twenty million men without even saying four sentences.”
The capital’s dream girl for twenty million men?
Fang Mo stared blankly for a moment before immediately understanding what Ning Yuelan meant.
She herself was Jiangcheng’s dream girl for twenty million men, while the He family’s residence was in the capital.
The same lofty status, the same fair beauty, the same immense wealth.
Wasn’t Miss He the capital’s version of the dream girl for twenty million men?
“But there should be more than twenty million single young men in the capital…”
Ning Yuelan rolled her eyes when she heard that.
“Is that what you’re focusing on? You little brat, what’s this about? Do you want to figure out exactly how many rivals you have for Miss He?”
“What are you talking about?”

“Actually, I still prefer Jiangcheng’s dream girl for twenty million men.”
Fang Mo muttered this softly. He had no idea whether Ning Yuelan had heard him, but the car suddenly fell silent.
“Promise me one thing, husband.”
Hmm!?
Did she just call me husband?
Fang Mo froze.
This was the first time Sister Yuelan had called him that while the two of them were alone together.
His Adam’s apple bobbed involuntarily.
“What is it?”
At that moment, Ning Yuelan slowly pulled up in front of a restaurant. The sunlight was blocked by the surrounding high-rises, leaving patches of light scattered across the concrete through the branches of the trees. A faint halo also settled over Ning Yuelan’s exquisite face.
At that moment, Ning Yuelan was as beautiful as an oil painting.
Then she parted her red lips.
“From now on, don’t casually make other girls fall for you, all right?”
“If you stir someone’s heart, you have to take responsibility for her. And I only want you to be responsible for me.”
“Brother Shen!”
“Hmm!”
As Shen Changqing walked along the road, he encountered familiar people, and they would exchange greetings or nod to each other.
But no matter who they were, none of them had any unnecessary expression on their faces, as though they were indifferent to everything.
Shen Changqing was already accustomed to it.
This was because he was in the Demon Suppression Division, an institution responsible for maintaining the stability of the Great Qin Empire. Its primary duty was to slay demons, monsters, and other supernatural abominations, though it also had several subsidiary functions.
It could be said that every person in the Demon Suppression Division had stained their hands with a great deal of blood.
Once a person had grown accustomed to life and death, many things would gradually cease to move them.
When Shen Changqing had first arrived in this world, he had found it difficult to adapt. But after a long time, he had grown used to it.
The Demon Suppression Division was immense.
Everyone who could remain there was either a powerful expert or someone with the potential to become one.
Shen Changqing belonged to the latter category.
The Demon Suppression Division was divided into two professions: Guardians and Exorcists.
Anyone who entered the Demon Suppression Division had to begin at the lowest level as an Exorcist.

From there, they would rise step by step, eventually gaining the possibility of becoming a Guardian.
Shen Changqing’s predecessor had been a trainee Exorcist in the Demon Suppression Division, the lowest rank among all Exorcists.
Having inherited his predecessor’s memories, Shen Changqing was very familiar with the environment of the Demon Suppression Division.
It did not take long before he stopped in front of a pavilion.
Unlike the other bleak and murderous areas of the Demon Suppression Division, this pavilion seemed to stand apart from the rest. Amid the bloodstained atmosphere of the division, it exuded a peculiar tranquility.
The pavilion’s doors stood wide open, and people occasionally entered or left.
After only a moment’s hesitation, Shen Changqing stepped inside.
Once he entered the pavilion, the atmosphere changed abruptly.
The fragrance of ink, mingled with a faint smell of blood, rushed toward him. His brows instinctively drew together, but soon relaxed again.
The bloody scent clinging to everyone in the Demon Suppression Division was almost impossible to wash away completely.
