Volume One, Chapter 19: Is Miaomiao Not Coming Back?

Yu Yaxuan sneered coldly; her temper remained as volatile as ever—any slight defiance against her wishes would set her off.
In the past, she had devoted herself wholeheartedly, enduring grievances and unconditionally accommodating her.
But now...
“Do you really think it’s because of those few words?” Yu Yaxuan retorted, torn between laughter and tears.
Why had the daughter she nurtured with love become so selfish and self-centered?
Was it truly a failure of her upbringing?
“If not, then what? I told you not to divorce your father back then, but you insisted on going your own way. You embarrassed me at grandma’s birthday banquet, and now that I’m about to get engaged, I invite you, and you act so high and mighty? Yu Yaxuan, how can you be so selfish?!”
Yu Yaxuan couldn’t help but sneer bitterly. “Yes, I am a selfish and self-centered mother, unworthy of a daughter as outstanding as you. Don’t contact me anymore.”
With that, Yu Yaxuan hung up the phone.
Tears fell involuntarily.
She truly didn’t understand where she had gone wrong.
She was clearly the victim—why should she suffer in silence?
She had a child; did that mean she was no longer herself?
Did she no longer deserve her own thoughts and choices?
If that was the case,
She would rather not have this daughter.
“Mom, don’t be sad. You still have me.”
Cheng Miaomiao immediately stepped forward and wrapped Yu Yaxuan in a tight embrace.
Feeling the soft, fragrant daughter in her arms, Yu Yaxuan could no longer hold back her sobs.
It was as if releasing years of pent-up grievances.
Cheng Zhengchu watched from the side, an inexplicable ache in his heart.
Strange.
It was clearly her daughter who was unfilial.
Why did he feel so upset?
Meanwhile, Lin Baozhu, having just been hung up on, nearly exploded with anger.
This was the first time Yu Yaxuan had treated her this way.
Previously, no matter what, Yu Yaxuan was always compliant with her.
Could it be that because Lin Baozhu hadn’t sided with her over the divorce, Yu Yaxuan harbored resentment?
Was she really that petty?
She only did it for her own good!
Yu Yaxuan was just a housewife—what kind of man could she find after leaving Lin Jingsheng?

She found an electrician who even brought along a stepchild, yet he wouldn’t attend his own biological daughter’s engagement ceremony, showing no sign of being a mother!
“Well? Did your mom agree?” Lin Jingsheng asked quietly.
He hadn’t seen Yu Yaxuan for a long time, and for some reason, he felt a slight thrill.
They had been a long-married couple but had never been apart this long.
Although divorced, there was still affection.
As a friend, it was natural to care about his ex-wife.
“No, she said she won’t come.”
“What?! She won’t come to such an important event as your engagement?!” Lin Jingsheng’s expression darkened immediately.
Huang Xiulan, suppressing a smile, put on a mournful face and said, “I never thought my sister could be so childish at her age. Baozhu is her own daughter, yet she’s so heartless as to skip her engagement ceremony...”
When Lin Baozhu had come back and said she wanted to invite Yu Yaxuan, she felt uneasy. Now, seeing Yu Yaxuan dig her own grave, she immediately felt relieved.
What use was it for Lin Baozhu to care about her biological mother? Yu Yaxuan now had another daughter and had completely forgotten about her.
After all the kindness she showed, she was truly an ungrateful wretch.
“How can this woman be like this? Baozhu grew up with her, and I always thought she was gentle and weak. Now that she’s married, she doesn’t even care about her own daughter?” Wang Guihua’s face darkened upon hearing this.
She had been thinking well of Yu Yaxuan all this time, but it turned out she was just like Huang Xiulan—no good at all!
“Enough, stop talking.” Lin Jingsheng frowned and softened his tone. “The Xie family has explicitly asked your mother to attend. There’s only a month left. No matter what it takes, you must get your mother to agree to come to the engagement banquet, understand?”
Lin Baozhu pouted, reluctant but could only nod.
That evening, after Cheng Miaomiao comforted Yu Yaxuan and went to visit a friend, Cheng Zhengchu cooked dinner, feeling awkward facing Yu Yaxuan’s tear-swollen eyes.
“Um, don’t be sad... eat more dinner, and you won’t feel so down...”
Cheng Zhengchu was extremely embarrassed. As the CEO of the Cheng Group, this was his first time trying to comfort a woman.
In the past, any woman who saw his eyes light up would cling to him without needing coaxing.
But this woman was different.
He inexplicably cared for her and felt sorrow for her.
Yu Yaxuan noticed Cheng Zhengchu’s awkwardness and smiled through her tears.
“I just thought about Baozhu when she was little, and I lost control of my emotions for a moment. Sorry to make you see me like this.”
A gentle smile still graced her face.
Yet this politeness and distance made him feel a strange sadness.
She seemed to see him as nothing more than a stranger.
Thinking this, Cheng Zhengchu felt a little frustrated.
But Yu Yaxuan remained calm, oblivious to his shifting mood.
“Actually, if you have anything to tell me, you can.”
“Hm?”

Yu Yaxuan looked at him, puzzled.
Meeting Yu Yaxuan’s bright eyes, Cheng Zhengchu was momentarily stunned.
“Since you came to me, there’s no need to keep your grievances bottled up.”
Seeing his awkwardness, Yu Yaxuan couldn’t help but smile faintly.
Was this concern for her?
Her heavy heart was instantly lightened. She looked steadily at him and softly replied, “Okay.”
Seeing Yu Yaxuan relax, Cheng Zhengchu breathed a sigh of relief.
As long as she didn’t treat him as an ornament, all would be well.
There was a long road ahead.
Inside the bar.
Cheng Miaomiao immediately spotted Bai Xiaoxiu, who was drunk out of her mind.
“Hey, you’re a girl—aren’t you afraid someone will take you away if you drink so much?”
Looking around at the chaotic environment, Cheng Miaomiao frowned in disgust.
Perhaps influenced by Yu Yaxuan, she now felt uncomfortable in places like bars.
“Why are you pretending? Didn’t we always come to this bar before?”
Bai Xiaoxiu took a big gulp and suddenly burst out laughing. “Do you know? My parents are getting divorced...”
“Divorcing? Uncle and aunt always seemed fine—why are they divorcing?” Cheng Miaomiao was surprised that Bai Xiaoxiu’s parents’ marriage was falling apart at this stage.
“It’s because my mom offended some people, and my dad lost his job...” Bai Xiaoxiu sighed. “I can’t be a rich daughter anymore. Can you help me find a job?”
Though she didn’t know Cheng Miaomiao’s true identity, her intuition told her Miaomiao’s status was far better.
They had been friends since childhood, and even though Cheng Miaomiao later studied abroad, they kept in touch.
Their relationship remained good.
Finding a job wouldn’t be difficult for Cheng Miaomiao.
“All right, I’ll take care of it.” Cheng Miaomiao agreed immediately. “But on one condition—you can’t drink anymore. Right now, you have to come home with me!”
“Miaomiao, please take me home, okay? Stay with me tonight...” Bai Xiaoxiu collapsed into Cheng Miaomiao’s arms. Cheng Miaomiao had no choice but to call Cheng Zhengchu.
“Dad, my best friend’s family has some problems. I need to comfort her, so I won’t be coming back.”
“Okay, be safe.”
Cheng Zhengchu replied softly, while Yu Yaxuan beside him asked with concern, “Miaomiao’s not coming back?”
