Chapter 61: Duelists and Assassins Flying All Over the Sky
Within the small courtyard, a murderous aura filled the air, accompanied by the cold flash of blades and the howling of a desolate wind.
The dozen or so assassins did not take Su Chen's people seriously at all.
They had issued a warning.
Unfortunately, however, Su Gui completely ignored them. Even after being told to leave, they stubbornly stayed put.
Watching Su Gui approach with a shovel in hand, Su Chen felt a deep sense of worry.
He was unsure whether Su Gui could handle more than a dozen seasoned assassins on his own.
Even with Cheng Chumò pitching in, it probably wouldn't make much difference.
Su Chen knew a thing or two about Cheng Chumò; the man lacked the ferocious valor of his father, Cheng Yaojin.
At best, Cheng Chumò could manage to fight two opponents simultaneously.
It seemed they had no choice but to rely on the workers here.
"Old Third Song, lead the men forward with me. Let's press the advantage."
Su Chen hoped that relying on sheer numbers might make the assassins hesitate.
Of course, he also understood that these professional killers viewed human lives as worthless, making them indifferent to numerical superiority.
"You court death! Kill them!"
"Kill!"
"Kill!"
The assassins let out chilling battle cries.
Hearing these shouts, many of the workers were terrified, their legs turning to jelly.
Some of them probably lacked the courage to even slaughter a pig or a sheep.
Facing such a horrific scene now, doubts and panic began to creep into their hearts.
Yet, only Su Gui remained utterly calm.
A calmness so profound it struck both Su Chen and Cheng Chumò as bizarre.
Could this fellow have something wrong with his head as well?
Dragging his heavy shovel, he continued to walk straight into the thick of the assassin group.
"Watch out!"
Cheng Chumò cried out as he saw an assassin slash directly at Su Gui.
The assassin was clearly well-trained, his blade-work vicious and merciless.
Everyone's heart leaped into their throats; taking a blow like that meant certain death.
Su Chen refused to stand by and watch anything happen to Su Gui.
After all, Su Gui had only entered his service a few days ago.
Yet, in the very next second, everyone froze in astonishment.
Su Gui was still standing right where he was, but the assassin who had lunged at him was already sprawled on the ground, twitching violently.
In the split second before the assassin closed in, quick as lightning, Su Gui had swung his iron shovel straight down onto the man's skull.
*Thud!*
At the dull impact, the assassin had hit the ground, blood pooling around him.
Seeing this, Su Chen was instantly overjoyed.
It was clear Su Gui possessed formidable hidden skills. Otherwise, he couldn't have moved with such breathtaking speed to knock the assassin down with a single strike.
"It seems my guess was correct. For several years, Su Gui was not in the estate; he must have been sent out by my old man for special training back then."
Su Chen could sense that his father had likely vetted and arranged for this man long beforehand.
After all, a new steward needed to possess versatile talents.
Much like Su Fu, who in the past had doubled as a steward while protecting his father.
Cheng Chumò was equally stunned.
"Good grief! That shovel strike was magnificent. Looks like we actually have a fighting chance today!"
Cheng Chumò could see even more clearly now that Su Gui was extraordinarily skilled.
With a single move, he had instantly floored a man in black.
The remaining assassins felt rage burning in their chests.
How could such a thing be allowed to happen?
This was a blatant slap to their faces.
As dignified professional assassins, if they couldn't even defeat a man who looked like a simple peasant, how could they ever show their faces in the pugilistic world again?
"Brat, you're dead today! We will certainly not spare you! Everyone charge together! And you few, head over there and bring Su Chen's head to me!"
Unwilling to waste any more breath, the remaining assassins rushed forward in a swarm.
*Clang! Bang! Smash!*
The assassins engaged Su Gui in fierce combat.
The first assassin had fallen purely because of carelessness and sheer arrogance, allowing Su Gui to crack his skull with a shovel.
The subsequent assassins were evidently much more cautious, keeping their blades raised to guard their heads.
Even so, several of them still took heavy blows from Su Gui's iron shovel.
Meanwhile, Cheng Chumò was locked in a grueling one-on-one duel with a single assassin, neither gaining the upper hand.
It was only now that Cheng Chumò realized how lacking his own abilities were; compared to Su Gui, the two of them were worlds apart.
If things kept going like this, he might not even be able to defeat a single opponent.
"No, I have to go over there and give him a hand. Working together will make us much more efficient."
Realizing this, Cheng Chumò quickly fought his way toward Su Gui's position.
Su Gui was still holding his ground against the assassins using only his shovel.
Cheng Chumò's arrival proved to be a massive help.
Since Cheng Chumò covered his blind spots and fended off attacks from behind, Su Gui was free to slaughter the enemies in front of him with absolute focus.
"Hurry up and beat these bastards to the ground! Leave the rest to me!"
Once Cheng Chumò arrived, he urged Su Gui to pick up the pace and finish off the assassins as quickly as possible.
Meanwhile, a few assassins had broken away from the main skirmish.
They were now charging directly toward Su Chen.
After all, their primary objective tonight was Su Chen's head; everyone else was secondary.
While Su Chen's side possessed a large number of people, the cowards among them vastly outnumbered the brave.
Out of the more than one hundred workers, seventy or eighty had already cowered backward, completely paralyzed by fear and unable to step forward.
Even Old Third Song, standing at the very front, was trembling from head to toe.
Yet, a deep instinct told Old Third Song that he absolutely could not run away; he had to protect Su Chen.
Without Su Chen, these people would likely struggle even to survive in the days to come.
Su Chen completely understood their hesitation, as these men were all born and raised as farmers.
To have them slaughter a pig or sheep usually required several people cooperating.
To expect them to face vicious, bloodthirsty assassins now was an enormous test of courage.
The slightest lapse in concentration could cost someone their life.
"Never mind all that! Pick up whatever weapons you have in your hands and throw them straight at them! Smash them to death!"
Though the workers lacked the courage to engage the assassins in hand-to-hand combat, they were certainly skilled at throwing objects.
Hearing Su Chen's shout, the panicked crowd regained a fraction of their composure.
That was right—they might not dare to step forward, but that didn't mean they couldn't hurl projectiles.
And their hands were already clutching a chaotic jumble of everyday items.
The charging assassins had never anticipated this.
They were not facing a disorganized, helpless mob of peasants.
With Su Chen standing his ground and directing operations with such absolute calmness, any hope the assassins had of escaping unscathed had vanished.
A storm of miscellaneous items filled the sky.
Cleavers, cutting boards, brooms, iron shovels, stones...
Anything they could grab within arm's reach was hurled forward simultaneously.
Disregarding everything else, following Su Chen's instructions, their sole goal was to bludgeon these intruders to death.
*Crash! Clatter! Thud!*
Blinded by the barrage of objects raining down upon their heads, the assassins found themselves completely unable to defend against the onslaught.
In desperation, one of the assassins hurled his blade directly toward Su Chen.
"Young master, watch out!"
Catching sight of the flying dagger streaking toward them, Old Third Song cast all caution to the wind and lunged forward to shield Su Chen with his own body.
