Chapter Thirty-Seven: Cheng Yaojin Accidentally Throws the Troublemaker
Upon hearing that even Su Chen could not cure him, Cui Wenbin flashed a sinister smile. In truth, one of the reasons he had agreed to come here was to seek revenge against Su Chen. If it hadn’t been for that night when Su Chen stole his thunder to meet with Yang Wan'er, he would never have been beaten to such a state by her subordinates the following day. With Yang Wan'er now missing, Su Chen was the only one he could target.
"Heh, so your clinic is nothing but a hollow reputation," Cui Wenbin sneered. "Since that's the case, everyone, smash this place to pieces! Today, I, Cui Wenbin, will risk my life to drag you down with me, Su Chen."
As he spoke, he directed his dozen or so henchmen to begin wrecking the clinic. Having already been reduced to a cripple, he no longer cared about the consequences—even if the Su family or the Crown Prince were to blame him, that was a problem for later.
Su Chen frowned. He had felt a sliver of sympathy for Cui Wenbin just moments ago, but seeing him act with such malice, that sympathy vanished. He was merely getting what he deserved.
"Don't think your Cui family is so formidable. This place belongs to us brothers. Do you dare to act so insolently here?" Cheng Chumou stepped forward immediately. In Chang'an, they had never shied away from conflicts with the great noble families; they weren't afraid of them. If it was trouble they wanted, Cheng Chumou felt they were more than happy to oblige. Besides, Su Chen was not a man to be trifled with; he was usually the one seeking out trouble, not the other way around.
"So, you came here specifically to cause trouble," Su Chen said, passing final judgment. "Then pick up your pathetic stretcher and get out. From this day forward, no one from the Cui family is permitted to enter my clinic."
Cui Wenbin continued to sneer. He was a broken man now and had no desire to hold back. No matter who stood before him, it made no difference. He was determined to fight Su Chen to the bitter end. "What are you idiots waiting for? I told you to smash this clinic!" he roared at his servants. Though they were intimidated by the presence of Su Chen and Cheng Chumou, they dared not disobey their master. Just as they hesitated, a thunderous roar shook the entire building.
"Who is making a scene here?"
Cheng Yaojin was just arriving. He had intended to come over to ask Su Chen for some wine, only to hear someone causing a disturbance inside. This instantly infuriated him; he valued this place even more than his own home, as it was Su Chen’s clinic, and his own son was there. Moreover, with the prospect of the fine wine Su Chen produced at stake, he couldn't let anyone ruin his chances.
Cheng Yaojin marched in with his men, immediately petrifying the Cui family's group. After all, everyone knew Cheng Yaojin—the notorious "demon king." Upon entering, he spotted Cui Wenbin on the stretcher and, without a second thought, grabbed him. Cui Wenbin, already severely injured, could barely move his arms. He was lifted into the air as light as a feather by Cheng Yaojin.
"You brat, so you're the one who wanted to smash up the clinic, eh?" Cheng Yaojin gripped Cui Wenbin by the hair, hoisting him up. Cui Wenbin struggled, but he was powerless, and the pain in his scalp was excruciating.
"No, no..." Cui Wenbin gasped as he struggled, but suddenly, he felt himself sent flying through the air. With a heavy thud, he crashed onto the street outside. Deprived of breath, he fainted; already critically injured, this fall had pushed him to the brink of death.
The Cui family's steward and servants rushed outside. They dared not resist Cheng Yaojin, for the gap in status between them was insurmountable. After tossing the man out, Cheng Yaojin turned back with a grin. "Who was that fellow, causing such a ruckus? I’ve cleared him out for you. What do you think, nephew Su?"
Cheng Yaojin had acted on impulse and hadn't even realized who the man was. He had simply come for wine and, encountering trouble, had done what he always did—dealt with the injustice on the spot. Even Cheng Chumou was impressed by his father.
"Father, that was Cui Wenbin of the Cui family. You've half-killed the man," Cheng Chumou chuckled. It was simply bad luck for Cui Wenbin to run into Cheng Yaojin, who had arrived in a foul mood and, hearing someone wanted to wreck the clinic, had acted without hesitation. Even Cheng Yaojin was surprised by his own impulsiveness. Hearing his son's words, he realized who it was and quickly turned to go outside to check on him.
Cui Wenbin had already suffered shattered bones in his legs and had only just been stabilized by several doctors over the past two days. After being tossed by Cheng Yaojin, he was truly half-dead. Everyone followed him outside to observe. The Cui family members dared not say a word to Cheng Yaojin and hurriedly retrieved their stretcher to lift their young master onto it.
Cheng Yaojin felt a bit awkward; he hadn't intended to go that far. Seeing Cui Wenbin’s pale face, he realized the man was already severely wounded, and his rough treatment had made matters worse. However, given Cheng Yaojin's status, even if he had killed Cui Wenbin, the Cui family would at most complain to Li Shimin, and they wouldn't dare do anything else to him.
"Ah, so it was young master Cui. I truly didn't see clearly; I thought he was some street thug," Cheng Yaojin said, feeling quite embarrassed. But it was too late for words. He could only watch as the Cui servants carried their young master away. Cheng Yaojin sighed helplessly, sensing that this matter would inevitably become a headache.
Behind him, Cheng Chumou gave a silent thumbs-up; his father had certainly done a clean job of it this time.
