Qin Shihuang sensed a looming crisis! He dashed off at full speed! The eunuch wielding the net immediately tripped and fell flat on his face!

“Hurry! Run that way!”

“Quick, give chase!”

“This way, this way!”

“Ah!”

“Are you all useless? You can’t even catch a single dog!”

“It’s running that way again!”

“How is this dog even climbing trees?”

“It’s in the water! It’s trying to swim away!”

“This way!”

“Don’t push me!”

“Why can’t you catch this dog? Useless!”

...

Yin Ling’s emotions were like a roller coaster, rising and falling wildly before settling into calm.

“Your Majesty, Qin Shihuang is incredible...” Yin Ling awkwardly went out to look around and inexplicably felt relieved before returning.

Shen Fuyu yawned, thinking to herself, Isn’t that obvious? After all, it was she who shoved the dog into the spirit stream space and gave it a vigorous scrub. If that dog could be caught by those useless eunuchs, then she might as well prepare to have dog meat hot pot for dinner.

She truly wasn’t worried. Clashing with the Empress Dowager over a dog was exhausting and thankless, making her seem petty. She had raised Qin Shihuang all this time, nurturing him to be plump, clever, and adorable. It was only right he repay her efforts!

Come on, Qin Shihuang!

The eunuchs sent by the Empress Dowager were completely outwitted by this single dog. They even called for the imperial guards to assist, but no matter how hard the group worked, Qin Shihuang was as agile as anything but a dog. Exhausted, the entire group collapsed on the ground, unable to catch him.

Qin Shihuang disdainfully wagged his tail at them and trotted all the way back to Crescent Moon Palace.

“Woof woof!” Not a single one of you could catch me!

Shen Fuyu patted Qin Shihuang’s head and rewarded him with a large piece of dried meat. Yin Ling brought over a bowl of water. Qin Shihuang, evidently tired, chewed the meat eagerly and drank deeply before lying down beside Shen Fuyu to rest.

Now everyone in the imperial palace knew about the dog Shen Fuyu kept—how it had toyed with a group of palace servants and imperial guards, men armed with knives and spears. Many were injured, but the dog didn’t lose a single hair!

“I just found the noise very disturbing. What exactly happened?”

Qin Zhiyi had stayed with Shen Fuyu for a short nap but was awakened by the commotion. “Bring those outside here to see me!”

“Your Majesty! The Empress Dowager wants to kill our son!”

Shen Fuyu immediately leapt forward. “I’m so scared!”

Qin Zhiyi frowned, looking at her unscathed appearance. “What nonsense are you talking about?”

“I don’t care!” Shen Fuyu glared. “Qin Shihuang is my son! That foolish dog of Huizhaoyi’s did something terrible, so why should my son be beaten to death? I won’t accept it!”

“I don’t recognize Qin Shihuang as my son!” he snapped. Where on earth did he have a son? Ridiculous! Qin Zhiyi was angry but kept his composure. “Huizhaoyi? What happened while I was asleep?”

“Concubine Shu went to the Empress Dowager to complain that Huizhaoyi’s dog went mad and broke into her palace, damaging the ledgers. Huizhaoyi tried to explain, but the Empress Dowager insisted Huizhaoyi had been negligent with her dog, so she was demoted.” Shen Fuyu summarized the situation simply.

Qin Zhiyi almost laughed with anger. “In the end, isn’t this your doing?”

Who broke into Jingrou Palace and tore up the ledgers? Did he need to spell it out again?

“I don’t care!” Shen Fuyu pouted. “I don’t care!”

Anyway, she was just playing dead. No one would believe her if she said otherwise!

Before long, the bruised and battered imperial guards and the eunuchs from the Empress Dowager’s palace entered. Seeing their miserable state, Qin Zhiyi’s brow furrowed deeply. “You let a dog beat you all so badly?”

Neither dared say a word.

Who would be embarrassed enough to speak up?

“Pathetic!” Qin Zhiyi had never encountered such humiliation. “Imperial guards with weapons—how can you not even catch a dog? Truly, I’ve raised a bunch of useless men!”

He might as well have them beaten to death—what a disgrace!

Then he glanced at Qin Shihuang, sleek and shiny, sleeping soundly. Wouldn’t this be humiliating if it got out? A group of grown men, waving swords and spears, claiming to be highly skilled—yet they couldn’t even catch a dog?

The lead imperial guard lowered his head in shame and spoke cautiously, “Your Majesty, it’s not that we’re weak, but that dog... it’s just not like any dog we’ve ever seen...”

They had seen plenty of dogs—but who had ever seen one so agile? So clever?

They had been caught off guard!

“I don’t want to hear your excuses!” Qin Zhiyi angrily raised his hand. “Each of you who tried to catch the dog will receive twenty strokes with the military baton! I bet you’re all just slackers shirking your duties! Now get out!”

The disgraced guards left, and Qin Zhiyi said, “Chang Fu, summon the commander of the imperial guards to see me.”

“Yes.” Chang Fu agreed and quickly left, glad to get away from the scene of the scolding.

The eunuchs didn’t dare make a sound either. After all, the dog’s death had originally been their task, assigned by the Empress Dowager...

Now the matter had escalated. What was supposed to be just killing a dog had enraged the Emperor, resulted in punishment for several guards, and it seemed likely the military commander would also be held accountable...

But if they didn’t kill the dog... how could they report back to the Empress Dowager?

Caught between a rock and a hard place!

“Your Majesty, look at them. They’re the ones trying to kill my dog!” Shen Fuyu twisted beside Qin Zhiyi. “My Qin Shihuang isn’t like some foolish dog raised by others who committed such a grave offense! Your Majesty, this dog defeated the imperial guards! It’s so formidable! Killing it would be a great loss for Daxun!”

Qin Zhiyi frowned, looking at her. Couldn’t she stop digging a deeper hole? That sounded as if Daxun’s armies would depend on a dog in battle!

If word got out, Daxun would be forever disgraced in history!

Still, despite his thoughts, Qin Zhiyi was not one to take life lightly. Qin Shihuang was indeed an extraordinary dog, somewhat like his owner in character. He sighed and said, “Go back and tell the Empress Dowager that Consort Xian is pregnant and must avoid bloodshed. Since the fault lies with Huizhaoyi alone, she must bear the consequences.”

“Issue an edict: Huizhaoyi is to be confined to quarters for one month as a warning.”

Qin Shihuang’s life would definitely be spared.

Shen Fuyu was triumphant. “See? Whoever is at fault bears the responsibility. My Qin Shihuang is innocent and should not be implicated or killed over a minor matter. If he were beaten to death, how would the people of Daxun view this?”

She elevated the matter to a national issue!

On a small scale, it was just a dog; on a grander scale, if the rulers fail to set an example, the dynasty would be in chaos. If even the royal family resorted to beating a dog to death, what would the common folk think?

Shen Fuyu looked down at the eunuchs, who dared not breathe a word. She knew her words would be faithfully reported to the Empress Dowager, surely infuriating the old woman and silencing her previous criticisms of Shen Fuyu. Hmph!
